URBIZTONDO BEACH, San Juan, La Union, Philippines (Saturday, January 18, 2025) — Luana Silva (BRA) and Bronson Meydi (INA) made history today, winning the World Surf League (WSL) 2024 World Junior Championships Presented by TPB Philippines. The pair overcame a massive field of the world’s best pro junior surfers, aged 20-and-under, to etch their names into history as the newly crowned World Junior Champions at Monaliza Point at Urbiztondo Beach that turned on super clean surf in the three-to-four-foot range.
Bronson Meydi Wins World Junior Championship, Marking First WSL Title for Indonesia

Bronson Meydi (INA) has claimed a historic win today in the Philippines, becoming the first Indonesian to not only win the World Junior Championships, but win any WSL World Title. He achieved this after an impressive showing in the Final against one of the event standouts, Winter Vincent (AUS). After an incredible season that saw the exciting young natural footer win all three qualifying events, Meydi now celebrates the biggest event of his life and books a spot on the 2025 Challenger Series for his efforts.

“This feels so amazing, and I’m still a bit in shock,” Meydi said. “To do this for Indonesia feels so special. I’m super proud to bring this trophy home. It’s been an amazing week here in the Philippines. I always love my time here, and it just got a whole lot more special.”

The Final was one for the history books, with both surfers putting on incredible performances from the minute it started. Vincent continued his strong run of form at Monaliza Point, posting a two-wave total of 17.84 (out of a possible 20) for his perfect mixture of power and progression. Meydi, who had been building all event slowly, saved his best until last, posting a perfect 10-point ride for two massive full-rotation air-reverses, then backing it up to post an 18.80 two-wave total, the highest of the entire event.

“I knew I would have to go big against Winter [Vincent],” Meydi said. “He has been the guy to beat all week, and his surfing is amazing. I want to congratulate him on making the Final and having such a great performance here. I’m just super happy with this and look forward to celebrating with all my friends and family who support me so much.”

Luana Silva Becomes First Brazilian Woman to Claim World Junior Championship

Luana Silva (BRA) is the first Brazilian woman to win the WSL World Junior Title, beating Kana Nakashio (JPN) in a super exciting Final at Urbiztondo Beach. The 2024 Brazilian Olympic team member and former Championship Tour competitor has had a massive couple of years competitively, but today, she claimed her biggest win yet and made history doing so.

“This feels so good,” Silva said. “I have no words for this. I’ve been going through a bit of a rough time, I recently lost a good childhood friend of mine. I think she sent me that last wave, and this one is definitely for her. This is for her and her family, which feels so good.”

The pair went back and forth, trading mid-range scores, with Nakashio holding the advantage for the majority of the heat. Then, with 90 seconds left, Silva took a wave and took a narrow lead before Nakashio did the same, taking back the top spot. Just before the buzzer went, Silva found one more wave, smashing two quick vertical re-entries to get the score and win the heat with a two-wave total of 12.23 (out of a possible 20).

“I grinded through all of my heats,” Silva continued. “I never really found a great wave and surfed scrappy heats, but I guess I did a good enough job in each heat to get through and get the job done. I’m just so happy right now.”

Winter Vincent and Kana Nakashio Finish Runners-Up at Urbiztondo Beach

Australian upstart Winter Vincent (AUS) was the stand-out performer of the entire event up until the Final, posting the highest single wave scores and heat totals of every round. By the end of the week, Vincent owned three of the top five heat totals of the event, including the second highest, which he posted in the Final. His combination of searing frontside rail turns and fins-free above-the-lip maneuvers were a highlight of the event, and although he fell short of the win, Vincent was proud of his performance here in the Philippines.

“This is definitely the biggest event I have ever been in, so I’m stoked to make the Final,” Vincent said. “Obviously, it would have been great to go one step further, but I’m really happy with how I surfed. I have loved my time in the Philippines; the waves have been fun, and the people are so nice. Congrats to Bronson on taking the win, his surfing today was on another level and if was fun to be a part of it and push one and other.”

Kana Nakashio (JPN) came to La Union this week, having won a Qualifying Series (QS) event at the location this time last year, and her connection with the wave was evident through every round. The super smooth natural footer was in great touch, posting some of the highest heat totals of each round. In the Final, Nakashio fell just short but will once again leave the Philippines with a huge result as she now shits her focus on Challenger Series qualification.

“I’m really happy to make the Final here,” Nakashio said. “Luana is such an amazing surfer and I’m happy for her to win this event. I love the Philippines and always have such a good time here with so many fun waves. I can’t wait to come back.”

URBIZTONDO BEACH, San Juan, La Union, Philippines (Friday, January 17, 2025) — The stage has been set for Finals Day at the World Surf League (WSL) World Junior Championships Presented by TPB Philippines after the completion of the women’s Round of 16 and the women’s and men’s Quarterfinals. With more four-to-six-foot waves on offer at Urbiztondo Beach, the best up-and-coming surfers in the world put on epic performances, posting some of the biggest scores of the event to decide the Semifinalists ahead of Finals Day, which is likely to run tomorrow.
First-Time Women’s World Champion Guaranteed After Kerr Falls in Quarterfinals

Quarterfinal Heat 1 saw one of the biggest upsets of the event as Peruvian Arena Rodriguez (PER) took down reigning WSL World Junior Champion Sierra Kerr (AUS) in a super close matchup at Urbiztondo Beach. Rodriguez kept busy and found the best waves of the heat, while Kerr, who had shown great form in earlier rounds, struggled to find a rhythm and wasn’t able to overcome Rodriguez’s 12.67 two-wave total.

“It was so surreal to make this heat against Sierra,” Rodriguez said. “I needed to give it my all to get those scores and make that heat. I have been here for almost two weeks with my family, getting to know this wave and surfing every day. It’s different every day out there, but I feel like I know it now. Everyone here rips, so I need to give it my all in every heat.”

Indonesia’s Bronson Meydi Posts Highest Heat Total to Book Semifinal Spot

Indonesia’s Bronson Meydi (INA) fired a warning shot across the bow of his opponents, posting the highest heat total of the event so far with a 17.73 (out of a possible 20) for his signature aerial approach. Kai Odriozola (ESP) posted an 8.60 to keep himself within reach, but it wasn’t enough as Meydi toyed with the Urbiztondo ramps to book a Semifinal matchup with Australia’s Lennix Smith (AUS).

“That was probably one of the best heats I’ve ever surfed,” Meydi said. “I probably could have gone a bit bigger, but I had to seal the deal, and that was good enough to make the heat, and that felt pretty good. I heard that he got an 8.60, and I knew there were only seven minutes left, so I just needed one more, and when that one came, I had priority, so I took it. I was happy it improved my situation. Everybody in this comp is so good so it doesn’t matter who you’re up against, you got to bring your best.”

Semifinalists Go Big at Urbiztondo Beach Ahead of Finals Day

Japanese competitor Kana Nakashio (JPN) was the women’s standout performer in the Quarterfinals, posting a 15.00 point heat total that included an 8.33 to overcome Brazilian standout Laura Raupp (BRA). Raupp came out of the gates strong but Nakashio’s poise and timing was on point, earning her multiple solid scores and the lead for the entire heat. Nakashio will now face Arena Rodriguez (PER) in Semifinal 2 as she looks to continue her relationship with La Union, having won a Qualifying Series 3000 event at this location this time last year.

“The waves have been so fun today, so I have just been enjoying myself,” Nakashio said. “I feel like I surf my best when I’m having fun and I always have fun at this wave. I hope to keep enjoying myself into Finals Day tomorrow.”

Wildcard Lennix Smith (AUS) continued his charge towards Finals Day with another buzzer-beater at Monaliza Point. Smith found himself chasing a near-excellent score for the majority of his matchup with South African Luke Thompson (RSA), who was dominating the heat with a two-wave total of 15.30 for his powerful frontside approach. Then, with only 45 seconds remaining, Smith took off on an average-looking wave and patiently waited for it to stand up, which it eventually did, with the exciting natural footer taking full advantage, boosting a super inverted air-reverse, then fitting in a solid closeout hit to post an 8.10 and win the heat to progress into the Semifinals.

Smith’s fellow Aussie Winter Vincent (AUS) put on another super impressive performance in Quarterfinal 1 against America’s Owen Moss (USA), posting a 9.17 for a massive, frontside air to the flats, the second-highest single wave of the event. Vincent, who has looked in ominous form for the entire week, will take on Dylan Donegan Dos Santos (ESP), who took the win over Blayr Barton (AUS) in Heat 2 of the Quarterfinals.

“I’m frothing and just so so stoked to get that win,” Vincent said. “Owen is such a good surfer and is a good friend of mine. We have been hanging out over here, and he’s been surfing incredibly, so this one means a lot to me. I was surprised to land that one and get the nine. I’ve been training a lot at home, so it’s nice to have it paying off.”

Australian Rosie Smart (AUS) will take on former CT competitor Luana Silva (BRA) in the Semifinals tomorrow after both competitors won their Round of 16 and Quarterfinal Heats today. Smart overcame fellow Aussie Isla Huppatz (AUS), while Silva took down Basque surfer Annette Gonzalez Etxabarri.

URBIZTONDO BEACH, San Juan, La Union, Philippines (Thursday, January 16, 2025) — Day 3 of competition at the World Surf League (WSL) World Junior Championships Presented by TPB Philippines has decided the men’s Quarterfinalists after the Elimination Round and Round of 16 were completed. It was a day of impressive performances as a group of the world’s best 20 and under surfers moved a step closer to achieving their dreams whilst some of the event favourites had their campaigns ended in clean four-to-six-foot surf at Urbiztondo Beach.
Top Two Seeds Ousted in Round of 16 at Urbiztondo Beach Spains Dylan Donegan Dos Santos (ESP) has claimed a massive scalp at La Union, dispatching former WSL World Junior Champion Jarvis Earle (AUS) in Heat 3 of the Round of 16. Donegan Dos Santos wasted no time, finding a number of decent scores early before posting a 7.50 (out of a possible 10) for three super smooth, powerful frontside gouges to lock in a heat total of 13.40 (out of a possible 20). Earle stayed patient, waiting for a wave to back up his single wave of 6.23, but it never came, leaving the Donegan Dos Santos to take the win and progress to the Quarterfinals, where he will take on Blayr Barton (USA).

“Jarvis (Earle) is one of my favourite surfers and is obviously the favourite here as he has already won a World Junior Title, so I knew it was going to be a really tough heat, and I’m so stoked to make it, and head to the Quarterfinals,” Donegan Dos Santos said. “He’s so good, so I needed to make him nervous at the end and be smart with priority. I think I surfed well, but I can definitely surf better, so I’ll save my best until last.”

Australian Wildcard Lennix Smith (AUS) put on a clutch performance in Heat 5 of the Round of 16 to overcome the event top seed Leo Casal (BRA) in the dying minute of their matchup. Challenger Series standout Casal held the lead for the majority of the heat until the young New South Wales South Coaster Smith took off on a set and posted an 8.33 for two super committed, fins-free rail turns. Casal then exercised priority with a couple of minutes left, leaving Smith out the back, needing a score. He found a set and took off deep, smashing three massive turns to earn a 6.53 and win the heat with a two-wave total of 14.70.

“I’m still shaking, actually; I’m just that wrapped to get the win,” Smith said. “It was crazy at the end there I was so lucky to get that wave. I had an opportunity just before that and didn’t make the most of it, so I made the most of that last one. When I finished it, I was so stoked I had to throw a little claim in there. I thought, ‘why not everyone else does’. I’m just absolutely wrapped.”

Luke Thompson Wins South African Face Off For Spot in Quarterfinals

Heat 6 of the Round of 16 was a bittersweet matchup between countrymen and good friends, Daniel Emslie (RSA) and Luke Thompson (RSA), who had both been in great form at Monaliza Point all week, but only one could progress into the Quarterfinals. Emslie held an early advantage, finding a good rhythm in the pulsing surf to earn a heat total of 11.67. Thompson struggled to find a backup to his single wave score of 7.00 until the last few seconds when he smashed two turns to take a 0.03 point lead and win with a total of 11.70 to book a spot in the Quarterfinals where he will meet Lennix Smith (AUS).

“When Daniel (Emslie) saw we had each other it was a tough one because it’s both of our last events at the junior level,” Thompson said. “I can’t think of a better way for one of us to have gone out – surfing against one another. We have been competing with each other since we were 10 years old, so it’s cool to be here together, but unfortunately, we drew each other. At the end of the day, I had a job to get done, and I took my opportunities, especially at the end. It’s tricky conditions, but it’s super fun out there.”

Competition Heats Up in The Philippines

Australian hopeful Winter Vincent (AUS) continued his searing form at Monaliza Point, posting a 15.53 heat total to now own the highest and second-highest totals of the event so far. Vincent continued to display speed, power and flow on his rail whilst adding some progressive flare with an impressive tail-high air reverse to claim a solid win over Indonesian I Made Ariyana (INA).

Indonesian livewire Bronson Meydi (INA) continued to build momentum on Day 3 of competition, taking down Floridian Ryan Huckabee (USA) in the Round of 16 with his impressive read on the walls of Monaliza Point. Huckabee’s fellow American representatives, Blayr Barton (USA) and Owen Moss (USA) found more success as they won their way into the Quarterfinals.

The last heat of the day witnessed Kai Odriozola (ESP) claim an impressive win over Elimination Round standout Francisco Ordonhas (POR), which included an excellent single ride of 8.17. Odrizola will take on Bronson Meydi (INA) in Quarterfinal 4 when competition resumes at Urbiztondo Beach.

URBIZTONDO BEACH, San Juan, La Union, Philippines (Tuesday, January 14, 2025) — Day 2 of the World Surf League (WSL) World Junior Championships Presented by TPB Philippines, has seen the first competitors eliminated with the completion of the women’s Elimination Round. Some of the event’s top seeds bounced back into form as Urbiztondo Beach delivered more super clean surf in the two-to-three-foot range.
Reigning WSL World Junior Champion Sierra Kerr Goes Big on Day 2

Reigning WSL World Junior Champion Sierra Kerr (AUS) was a clear standout on Day 2 of competition, posting an excellent 8.33 (out of a possible 10) for an impressive front-side air-reverse. Kerr took off on a closeout, raced down the line and hit a solid section to land the air, then backed it up shortly after to beat Philippine Wildcard Cathleya Casals (PHL) with a two-wave total of 14.66 (out of a possible 20), the highest of the women’s event so far.

“I caught a wave right when the heat started, then as I was paddling back out, I saw that wave and went for it,” Kerr said. “It looked like a pretty hard section to hit, but it worked out, and the landing was pretty smooth. Once I landed that air, I just wanted to keep ripping. It slowed down a bit, so I was glad I got that start. I’ve been to the Philippines before, but this is my first time in La Union, and it’s cool. The waves have been fun, and the locals are super nice. I had experience surfing at the CT level last year, so it’s been cool to take the experiences I’ve had there and apply them here at the World Junior Championships.”

Heat 5 of the Elimination Round witnessed Sophia Medina (BRA) go head-to-head with Kohai Fierro (PYF) as both competitors hoped to move a step closer to following in the footsteps of their siblings who have also won WSL World Junior Titles (Gabriel Medina 2013 & Vahine Fierro 2017). It was a ding-dong battle with the lead changing multiple times throughout the heat, but in the end, it was the frontside attack of Medina that earned a 9.33 heat total to narrowly win by just 0.03 of a point.

“That was a super close heat,” Medina said. “I know she is such a good surfer, and the waves were slow, so anything could happen. The wave that I got my high score on came from nowhere so I was so happy to have that come through. Coming from Brazil, there are a lot of beach breaks, so there are a lot of waves like this, which is helpful. I think the experience I had last year on the Challenger Series has been super helpful.”

Former Championship Tour (CT) competitor Luana Silva (BRA) looked to be finding a rhythm with the waves at Urbiztondo Beach as she overcame Philippine Wildcard Mara Lopez (PHL) in Heat 3 of the Elimination Round. Silva’s smooth frontside rail surfing was a perfect match for the long reeling walls of Monaliza Point.

Australian Challenger Series competitor Ellie Harrison (AUS) bounced back well on Day 2 of competition, posting a two-wave total of 13.07 to progress into the Round of 16. Harrison showed power and poise along with a good mix of manuevers to claim her first heat win of the event.

“It was really fun out there,” Harrison said. “There were so many waves coming through. My plan was to just start early and get going. It was a really fun heat. I feel like I need to work on my consistency and enjoy the process along the way, and this is something I want to work on this year. It’s nice to be working on it already and having a good time with the crew we have over here.”

Other standouts on Day 2 included Cocona Kawase (JPN), Annette Gonzalez Etxabarri (Basque) and Rosie Smart (AUS). America’s Reid Van Wagoner (USA) put on a super impressive performance to take down one of the event hopefuls, Anon Matsuoka (JPN), in Heat 4 of the Elimination Round.

URBIZTONDO BEACH, San Juan, La Union, Philippines (Monday, January 13, 2025) – Day 1 of the 2024 World Surf League (WSL) World Junior Championships Presented by TPB Philippines, has seen action kick off at Urbiztondo Beach with the completion of the men’s and women’s Opening Rounds. It was a day of mixed results for the top seeds, with Monaliza Point delivering super clean surf in the three-to-four foot range.
Winter Vincent Steals The Show at Monaliza Point Australian young gun Winter Vincent (AUS) stole the show on Day 1 at Monaliza Point, posting the three highest single-wave scores and highest heat total of the event so far in his Opening Round heat. The silky smooth natural footer earned a 17.60 two-wave total (out of a possible 20), which included an impressive 9.27 (out of a possible 10) for three huge front-side hacks. With a top 20 finish on the Challenger Series in his maiden season, Vincent is poised for an epic end to 2024 with a massive result at the World Junior Championships.

“That was my first heat in a while, and it felt good to put a few together,” Vincent said. “Surfing on the Challenger Series last year was amazing for me. It was such a great experience travelling the world with some great friends and competing a lot, which I think has been super helpful. It’s great to be here in the Philippines, we’ve got a great group of Aussies so there’s a lot of support which is awesome.”

Women’s Top Seeds Sent to Elimination Round on Day 1 Day 1 of competiton at Monaliza Point proved to be a tough one for some of the women’s event’s top seeds, with eight of the top nine being sent to the Elimination Round on Day 1. Former Championship Tour (CT) competitor Luana Silva (BRA) narrowly lost to Catalina Zariquiey (PER), while reigning WSL World Junior Champion Sierra Kerr (AUS) was unable to overcome form surfer Kana Nakashio (JPN).

Brazilian hopeful Sophia Medina (BRA) was sent to the Elimination Round after she was given a priority interference in Heat 2 of the Opening Round leaving France’s Hina-Maria Conradi (FRA) to progress into the Round of 16.

Canadian 2024 Olympic Team member Sanoa Dempfle-Olin (CAN) overcame Australian challenger Ellie Harrison (AUS), who struggled to find a rhythm on the long Mona Liza Point walls.

The highest seed to win her heat on Day 1 was standout surfer Laura Raupp (BRA), who took an impressive win over Cocona Kawase (JPN) and Lily Heny (RSA) in Heat 4 of the Opening Round. Raupp’s smooth and powerful frontside was a perfect match for the long right-handers on offer as she claimed victory with a two-wave total of 12.16. After finishing in the top 20 of the Challenger Series rankings in 2024, Raupp is hoping to get her year off to the perfect start with a big result here in the Philippines.

“I’m super happy to make that heat and get a good start in the early round and get some fun waves,” Raupp said. “It’s my first time here, and I’m loving it. Its a magical place, and this wave is a dream. I’ve been surfing for five or six hours a day, so I’ve been enjoying it here for sure.”

World’s Best Set Sights on 2024 WSL World Junior Title

On a day of mixed results for some of the event’s top seeds, a group of the best 20 and under surfers in the world made their intentions clear, setting their sights firmly on the 2024 WSL World Junior Title.

One of those competitors was Jahly Stokes (AUS), who put on a backhand surfing clinic, belting multiple critical turns to post a 7.17,  the highest single wave of the women’s Opening Round. She then backed it up with a 6.10 to post a 13.27 heat total, the third highest of the event so far. Stokes claimed three runner-up finishes to find her way to the World Junior Championships and will look to continue that consistency here in the Philippines this week.

“This is my first time over here to the Philippines and it’s been great,” said Stokes. “The place is beautiful, and the locals are really nice, so it’s great to be here. I’ve been here with my dad for about a week, just surfing a lot, so we’re stoked. I made a few mistakes in that heat, but it ended up working out, which is pretty lucky.”

American competitor Ryan Huckabee (USA) looked to be in a good flow on Day 1, showing a great mixture of finesse, flow, and explosive surfing. He earned a 7.17 for a single maneuver, a huge layback snap on a critical closeout section. Huckabee overcame two of the most experienced competitors at the location, Bronson Meydi (INA) and Philippine Wildcard Noah Arkfeld (PHL), to take his heat win on his birthday.

“I try not to think too much about who is in my heat; if I want to win this event, I have to be able to beat everyone,” Huckabee said. “I just went out there and did my thing and built a rhythm, and once I pulled that layback off, I felt a bit more comfortable and in control of the heat. I had a tough run on the Challenger Series, but I had some decent results late in the year, so I am happy to be coming into this event with some momentum and confidence.”

Aussie trio Isla Huppatz (AUS),  Lennix Smith (AUS) and former WSL World Junior Champion Jarvis Earle (AUS) also stood out on Day 1 along with I Made Ariyana (INA), Kai Odriozola (ESP) and Arena Rodriguez (PER) who all progressed into the Round of 16.

The last heat of the day saw two South African competitors, Luke Thompson (RSA) and Daniel Emslie (RSA), tied on 10.00 points each to only just overcome Hawaii’s Luke Swanson (HAW), who posted a 9.94 two-wave total. With Thompson having the highest single wave score, he moved into the lead and will progress into the Round of 16 while Swanson and Emslie head to the Elimination Round.
