HUNTINGTON BEACH, Calif., USA (Sunday, August 11, 2024) – Today, Sally Fitzgibbons (USA) and Alan Cleland Jr (MEX) won the World Surf League (WSL) Lexus US Open of Surfing Presented by Pacifico, Stop No. 4 of the 2024 Challenger Series. Two-to-three-foot, inconsistent swell was no issue for Fitzgibbons and Cleland on Finals Day as they overpowered the famed Huntington Beach lineup to secure wins over Bella Kenworthy (USA) and Marco Mignot (FRA) in their respective Finals. A shuffle in the rankings provided an array of upsets and elation throughout the week of competition. As the race for the 2025 Championship Tour (CT) qualification comes to the final two events, up-and-comers and veterans are both in the running on the Challenger Series leaderboard.
Sally Fitzgibbons Secures Second US Open of Surfing Win

In a remarkable Lexus US Open of Surfing run, Sally Fitzgibbons (AUS) pushed her way to back-to-back Final showings in Huntington Beach. She is now ranked No. 1 on the Challenger Series’ rankings. The 33-year-old was undeniable throughout the week following her induction to the Huntington Beach Walk of Fame.

“It’s a very special place and a very special beach,” said Fitzgibbons. “I just love that I can keep showing up, you never know what’s around the corner. You just have to believe, ‘You know what it could be my day,’ and ‘Why not?’ It’s just so special.”

Fitzgibbons surged through Finals Day, beginning with a dynamic Quarterfinal win over Sophia Medina (BRA). Fitzgibbons then defeated now No. 5 Nadia Erostarbe (EUK) in the Semifinals before her Final heat with Southern California’s own Bella Kenworthy (USA). She continues to showcase her best in Huntington Beach with her second US Open of Surfing title.

“I’ve just stopped connecting things, I’ve stopped connecting the dots,” added Fitzgibbons. “I’m just enjoying this right now. It’s like climbing a mountain for each individual event. There’s so many amazing surfers in this draw, and I just want to tell them to keep going.”

The women’s Final unfolded between Fitzgibbons and 17-year-old Bella Kenworthy (USA). Kenworthy earned her second-consecutive Final appearance on the 2024 Challenger Series. A quick start witnessed minimal scoring opportunity before Kenworthy found a better wave to earn a 6.93 (out of a possible 10). The Southern California crowd appreciated Kenworthy’s efforts, but Fitzgibbons responded with a 6.43 of her own by her signature power turns. Fitzgibbons’ 20-plus years of competitive experience showed as she took off on a solid wave and earned a 5.63 for the lead with six minutes left.

The ocean remained quiet heading into the final minutes, and Fitzgibbons held firm as Kenworthy could not secure another scoring opportunity. This returns Fitzgibbons to the podium in Huntington Beach for the first time since 2011.

Bella Kenworthy Nearly Goes Back-To-Back Wins In 2024 Challenger Series

Bella Kenworthy (USA) surged through competition for back-to-back Finals in the 2024 Challenger Series. Kenworthy, the sole competitor left in the draw from Southern California, overpowered a formidable field, including recent 2024 CT Rookie Alyssa Spencer (USA) in the Quarterfinals, and former CT standout Bronte Macaulay (AUS) in the Semifinals. She moves up to No. 2 on the rankings following her runner-up finish to Fitzgibbons and hopes to solidify herself among the 2025 CT qualifiers.

“It feels really good, and I’m super happy to back up my last result,” said Kenworthy. “Sally is such an inspiration, and I’ve grown up watching her. It’s so cool I get to share heats with her, and congrats, Sally.”

Alan Cleland Makes History with Mexico’s First-Ever US Open of Surfing Title

A highly-anticipated breakthrough for Alan Cleland Jr (MEX) sent him soaring up 41 spots in the rankings to No. 10. Cleland secured his first-ever Finals appearance and Challenger Series win. His success today began in a Quarterfinal clash with 2024 CT Rookie and last year’s event runner-up, Crosby Colapinto (USA). He went on to eliminate 2022 World Junior Champion Jarvis Earle (AUS) in the Semifinals. This marks the first time a Mexican surfer has won the US Open of Surfing. Cleland looks to further his successes by becoming the first Mexican to qualify for the CT.

“I don’t even have words to describe how I feel right now; it’s just crazy to have so much support from my home country and friends,” said Cleland. “It’s something I never really lived up to. I haven’t really won any big competitions, this is only my second WSL win. To be representing this flag, and all these people out here supporting me, it’s beautiful, and I’m just really happy.”

The men’s Final featured a pair of first-time Challenger Series finalists with Cleland and Marco Mignot (FRA) after incredible performances leading up to their showdown. Mignot kicked off the Final in powerful form, posting a 7.33 on his opening ride, putting pressure on Cleland. Cleland was able to respond with multiple forehand hits of his own, posting a 6.00, to take a slim lead over Mignot.

The 2022/2023 WSL Europe Qualifying Series (QS) winner, Mignot, wasn’t done and regained the lead before the ocean went flat for nearly 15 minutes. Huntington Beach provided one last opportunity for a patient Cleland, and he delivered a brilliant combination of major turns. He needed a 6.61, and garnered a 6.70 to become the first Mexican to claim a US Open of Surfing title.

“To stay composed that whole time, just believing in myself and that there was going to be a wave,” added Cleland. “Then, just hearing thirty seconds and the people on the pier yelling that a wave is coming, I surfed that wave with no time left, and now that I’m here, I’m just rattled.”

Marco Mignot’s Magnificent Runner-up Finish Catapults Him Up The Rankings

An amazing run for Marco Mignot (FRA) witnessed the Frenchman join Cleland in a historic, first-ever Challenger Series Final after posting some of the event’s best performances. His highlights included the highest single-wave score, a 9.67, and heat total, an 18.24 (out of a possible 20), in the Round of 64. Mignot had to overcome Australia’s George Pittar (AUS) in their Quarterfinal heat before his Semifinal against 2023 World Junior Champion runner-up Jackson Bunch (HAW)

“I remember surfing with him [Alan Cleland] in Pascuales,” said Mignot. “He was seven [year old], I was nine, and to be here in the water in the Finals at the US Open is amazing. You know, it’s only blessings. I just can’t believe it.”

US Open Shuffles Qualification Rankings Ahead of Final Two Stops

A momentous Finals Day witnessed multiple surges up the rankings to push contenders closer to 2025 CT qualification. A Quarterfinal finish for Australia’s George Pittar (AUS) moved him one spot closer to achieving his dream as he now sits at No. 3. Basque Country’s Nadia Erostarbe (EUK) also moved up one spot to give herself a better qualification position heading into the next event.

Former CT competitors Alejo Muniz (BRA), Miguel Pupo (BRA), and Michael Rodrigues (BRA) all established themselves in the Top 10 on the Challenger rankings.

2022 World Junior Champion Jarvis Earle (AUS) catapulted up the rankings 37 spots following his Semifinal finish and now sits at No. 17 as fellow Aussie Dakoda Walters (AUS) also jumped to No. 14.

The next stop on the 2024 Challenger Series will be the EDP Ericeira Pro, which starts September 29 and holds a competition window through October 6, 2024. This will be the fifth of six stops on the 2024 Challenger Series and will provide crucial points for Championship Tour qualification in 2025.

HUNTINGTON BEACH, Calif., USA (Saturday, August 10, 2024) – Finals Day awaits the World Surf League (WSL) Lexus US Open of Surfing Presented by Pacifico, Stop No. 4 of the 2024 Challenger Series. Head-to-head battles in the women’s and men’s Round of 16 provided electric moments in two-to-four foot, clean conditions. Today, the upper echelon of the Challenger Series rankings faced hefty upsets to keep the Championship Tour (CT) qualification race wide open with an all-important finish to US Open of Surfing action lined up. All-star Quarterfinal heats will kick off  Finals Day with thousands expected at the famed Huntington Beach.
SoCal Contenders Surge Into Finals Day
A formidable field of Southern California competitors made their move in the Round of 16 as they look to bring the US Open of Surfing title back to the West Coast.

Alyssa Spencer (USA) picked up the pace to add another Southern Californian to Finals Day after overtaking current Challenger Series No. 1 Isabella Nichols (AUS). Spencer’s signature backhand power and forehand flair earned a decisive win near home waters. Now, the 21-year-old has a massive Quarterfinal heat with fellow Southern California competitor Bella Kenworthy (USA) to see who can further their opportunity toward Huntington Beach legend.

“It was definitely a grindy heat out there, and I was just trying to stay active at the start of the heat,” said Spencer. “I just wanted to roll the dice on any wave that looked like a score. I just stuck to our plan that we had and closed out the rest of the heat with priority. That was a really big heat for me. This was the first time I’ve made a heat at the US Open in three years and my first Finals Day, but I don’t want to stop here.”

Despite the draw losing Californians Lakey Peterson (USA) and Kirra Pinkerton (USA), Kenworthy rose to the occasion against qualification threat Amuro Tsuzuki (JPN) in decisive fashion.

Pictured: Kolohe Andino (USA) looks for his long-awaited maiden US Open of Surfing title starting in Quarterfinal, Heat 4, for Finals Day. Credit: © WSL / Pat Nolan
Crosby Colapinto (USA) kickstarted the trend of a San Clemente surge to Finals Day with his Round of 16 performance over former CT competitor Ian Gentil (HAW). Then CT veteran Kolohe Andino (USA) overtook 2021 World Title contender Morgan Cibilc (AUS). Andino’s combination of power and aerial antics pushed him into a meaningful Finals Day where he will face 2023 WSL World Junior Championships runner-up Jackson Bunch (HAW).

“I think this is my first Finals Day since Portugal in 2021, but who’s counting (laughs),” said Andino. “I’m just super stoked. I’ve made four heats and I’ve had trouble just making any heats the last two years and just feel very lucky. I’m excited to be rocking up to Finals Day and give it a shot tomorrow.”

Unfortunately for Southern California fans on the beach, in a World Junior Championships rematch reigning WSL World Junior Champion Jett Schilling (USA) couldn’t find his form to overtake Jackson Bunch (HAW).

Sally Fitzgibbons’ Magic Week in Huntington Continues to Finals Day
An incredible week for former CT veteran Sally Fitzgibbons (AUS) continued in the Round of 16 with a major win over current Challenger Series No. 2 Erin Brooks (CAN). The Australian veteran and former event winner’s form was undeniable, posting a 15.00 heat total and will move into the Quarterfinals. On Thursday, August 8, Fitzgibbons was inducted into the Huntington Beach Walk of Fame. She joins an elite list of names including 11-time WSL Champion Kelly Slater (USA), four-time WSL Champion Lisa Anderson (USA), and many more.

“I’m still getting psyched watching [Lakey Peterson], you can’t put the fire out especially in two-foot Huntington for some reason just gets me so psyched,” said Fitzgibbons. “I loved my process today and the build-up to it and I think that’s where the Tour served me well is getting ready for those big matchups. At this point in my career I think you stop trying to connect the dots, and just enjoy those singular moments. I hope I can bring some stuff to the table and why not me, I want to go all the way.”

Miguel Pupo and Alan Cleland Provide Electric Performances
Former CT veteran Miguel Pupo (BRA) showed his world-class form in a dominant Round of 16 performance over event threat Riaru Ito (JPN). Pupo’s aerial antics soared him to an excellent 8.33 to push his heat total to a 15.33 and leave Ito needing near-perfection when time expired. Now, Pupo remains Brazil’s last men’s contender to bring the US Open of Surfing title to his home country for the first time since Yago Dora (BRA) in 2019.

“I feel like I had a bunch of opportunities on the rights and especially the first one which was a really good wave,” said Pupo. “It’s hard because the current is going against you, and the wave is bending away from you so it’s a lot of calculation. I was happy to get the air and then I got a really good set so I was trying to time that well knowing it would be a good score. [Ian Gouveia] and I shared some tears and something happened that I’ve never seen before where the whole athlete zone was clapping for him so that was special.”

Alan Cleland (MEX) added excellence of his own with an 8.17 over former CT threat Michael Rodrigues (BRA) to join Jarvis Earle (AUS), Marco Mignot (FRA), and George Pittar (AUS) into Finals Day.

A showcase from the legends of the West Coast took over Huntington Beach with three-time WSL Champ Tom Curren joining Shane Beschen, Matt Archbold, Mike Parsons, and local icon Jeff Deffenbaugh following his induction into the Huntington Beach Surfing Hall of Fame. The US Open of Surfing is one of Southern California’s biggest and best summer traditions. Former CT surfers and elite young talents battle at the Huntington Beach Pier in a crucial Challenger Series event. As the fourth stop of the Challenger Series, athletes will begin to secure their place on the 2025 Championship Tour at this event. In addition, the top longboarders will face off for the first time this season at the second event of the WSL Longboard Tour. And on the beach, there’s everything from live music to food and shopping to the X Games Vert Ramp. From dawn patrol to sunset sessions, there is something for everyone. Be there on the sand August 3-11, or watch the Lexus US Open of Surfing presented by Pacifico live August 6-11 on worldsurfleague.com.

Heritage Heat Takes Over US Open of Surfing Lineup
A special tribute to the legends of surfing unfolded for the Heritage Heat featuring three-time WSL Champion Tom Curren (USA) alongside former CT competitors Matt Archbold (USA), Mike Parsons (USA), Shane Beschen (USA), and recent Huntington Beach Surfing Hall of Fame inductee Jeff Deffenbaugh (USA).

“I was out there with guys like Tom Curren. I grew up surfing just around the pier in 1985 or ’86 and we wanted to surf like Tom and Occy,” said Huntington Beach’s own Deffenbaugh. “Plus guys like Shane Beschen I competed against and Matt [Archbold] and Mike [Parsons]. I was always chasing them so it’s an honor.”

Event organizers will reconvene tomorrow, Sunday, August 11, at 7:00 a.m PDT to determine the competition order for the day, with a likely start at 7:35 a.m. PDT.

HUNTINGTON BEACH, Calif., USA (Friday, August 9, 2024) – The action at the World Surf League (WSL) Lexus US Open of Surfing Presented by Pacifico, Stop No. 4 of the 2024 Challenger Series, continued today with more intensity as the competition approached its final two days. The swell peaked with five-to-seven-foot, clean morning conditions, pushing results from the fierce group of competitors battling to qualify for the Championship Tour (CT). The women’s top seeds kicked off in dynamic form in the Round of 32 alongside the men’s Round of 32 battles. Now, the men’s and women’s fields dwindle to just 16 as those remaining look to add their names to US Open of Surfing history.
Kolohe Andino Salvages Run Toward Maiden US Open Glory

Former CT veteran and San Clemente, California’s own, Kolohe Andino (USA) continues to look for his first US Open of Surfing title. Andino salvaged his 2024 campaign in the dying moments against a stacked Round of 32 heat. Andino’s prowess in the jersey and passion was on full display, taking to the air for a 6.67 (out of a possible 10) and a crucial heat win over former CT competitors Alejo Muniz (BRA), Dimitri Poulos (USA), and 2023 World Junior runner-up Jackson Bunch (HAW).

“I just knew it was such a stacked heat with Alejo [Muniz], Jackson [Bunch], and Dimitri [Poulos] surfing so good, so I was just really excited for that opportunity,” said Andino. “It was pretty difficult out there just being later in the day, and I saw Alejo just bolting for me to sit on me with two minutes left. I saw that right, and especially down wind you don’t know if you’re going to stick it, but I just sent it. I had so many emotions just because it’s been a weird four years for me, so to come back and make that heat was huge.”

Fellow San Clemente standout, reigning WSL Junior Champion Jett Schilling (USA) also claimed a massive win to close out men’s Round of 32 action, eliminating the defending event winner, Eli Hanneman (HAW), in Heat 8.

Jarvis Earle Keeps Surging Amid Heavy-Hitting Heats

2022 WSL World Junior Champion Jarvis Earle (AUS) continues to find success in his return to Southern California after claiming his Title in Cardiff. Earle’s competition in his Round of 32 heat included 2023 World Title contender Joao Chianca (BRA), former CT competitor Miguel Pupo (BRA), and Brazil’s newest qualification threat Edgard Groggia (BRA). Earle maintained the pace of the heat before soaring a massive air and earning a 7.67 to retake the lead from Pupo for another pivotal heat win.

“I knew it was going to be a tough heat with some really good Brazilian surfers in there,” said Earle. “I was stoked when I came down and saw conditions with these running lefts and I’m really stoked to come away with a win in that one. Huntington is really unique with so many people coming to the beach, and when I landed that air I heard the whole pier screaming so that was really special.”

Ian Gouveia Officially Requalifies for the Championship Tour

A momentous day for former CT competitor Ian Gouveia (BRA) officially qualified to rejoin the world’s best after advancing into the Round of 16 behind Riaru Ito (JPN). Gouveia’s terrific start to the year and win in Ballito helped set the 31-year-old up for success in Surf City USA. He will be back on the CT after six years trying to requalify.

“My voice is gone already, I just really have to thank my family and sponsors that kept believing in my surfing and my career,” said Gouveia. “That was a long six years and at the beginning of this year, this was going to be my do or die year. I was just thinking maybe it’s time to do another thing, but I had my spot in the Challenger Series so I had to take this shot. I’m just super stoked I can provide this to my family, my sponsors and my team.”

Fellow Brazilian, and former CT competitor, Caio Ibelli (BRA), joins Gouveia into the Round of 16 after a decisive heat win alongside fellow Round of 32 heat victors Alan Cleland (MEX), Dakoda Walters (AUS), and former CTer Ian Gentil (HAW).

Bella Kenworthy Returns to Home Waters in Dynamic Form

Today, Southern California duo Alyssa Spencer (USA) and Bella Kenworthy (USA) took over home waters. Kenworthy notched an important Round of 32 win, and Spencer posted an excellent 8.17 to earn an advancing position. Kenworthy returned to San Clemente victorious from the Ballito Pro, which catapulted her to No. 5 on the rankings, and in a CT qualification spot. Now, the 17-year-old looks to continue her momentum toward her first US Open of Surfing win and inch closer to the 2025 CT roster.

“I’m not feeling too nervous right now, and I just want to do the best I can in each heat and see where it goes,” said Kenworthy. “I have my new favorite board, and it just goes well in every condition. I love competing here, and I kind of knew what to expect with conditions here, and I’m definitely looking forward to seeing what comes.”

CT veteran and former event winner Lakey Peterson (USA) added her name to the list of Round of 32 heat winners as she looks for more Huntington Beach glory.

Ellie Harrison Plays Ultimate Spoiler and Eliminates Defending Event Winner Sawyer Lindblad

Australia’s emerging qualification threat, Ellie Harrison (AUS), put on a stunning showing in her Lexus US Open of Surfing debut. Harrison faced San Clemente native and defending event winner Sawyer Lindblad (USA), along with Kirra Pinkerton (USA), and Anon Matsuoka (JPN). Harrison took control of the heat after finding a morning gem to unleash her backhand attack and posted a 7.50. Pinkerton held firm in the advancing position after leading most of the heat and kept her hopes of bringing the US Open of Surfing title back to Southern California.

“I had a feeling we were going to have to do a run around, so I just tried not to go as fast as normal and just catch my breath,” said Harrison. “My coach told me that the first turn was pretty solid, and I just needed another one of those or a two-turn combo and it would be heat over. So that’s what I did, and I just tried to shut the heat down pretty early. I haven’t started the year off that well, but I got a fifth in Ballito, so I’m just trying to get more confidence in my heats again.”

Nadia Erostarbe Goes Excellent, Challenger Series Rankings Leaders Debut Strong

It didn’t take long for the first excellent score of the morning to drop, and it was current No. 6 Nadia Erostarbe (EUK) who provided during the Round of 32, Heat 2. The 24-year-old, Erostarbe, unleashed her powerful backhand attack to post an 8.17 and 15.34 heat total.

Also, current Challenger Series No. 1 Isabella Nichols (AUS) and No. 2 Erin Brooks (CAN) kicked off their respective US Open of Surfing runs into the Round of 16 alongside Keala Tomoda-Bannert (HAW) following brilliant showings to take Round of 32 victories.

Fellow European standout Tessa Thyssen (FRA) came out in winning form to best former CT elite and event winner Sally Fitzgibbons (AUS) following Fitzgibbons’ induction into the Huntington Beach Walk of Fame yesterday. Fitzgibbons earned second in the heat and will face Brooks in the Round of 16.

Event organizers will reconvene tomorrow, Saturday, August 9, at 7:00 a.m PDT to determine the competition order for the day, with a likely start at 7:35 a.m. PDT.

HUNTINGTON BEACH, Calif., USA (Thursday, August 8, 2024) – Impending swell arrived for the World Surf League (WSL) Lexus US Open of Surfing Presented by Pacifico, Stop No. 4 of the 2024 Challenger Series, and provided a spectacle of high-performance action. Four-to-six foot south swell filled in throughout the day for men’s Round of 64 with top-seeded battles as competitors elevated their performances to new heights. Scattered upsets and breathtaking moments had fans on the beach in uproar as both the men’s and women’s Round of 32 heats are now set for Friday, August 9.
Reigning World Junior Champion Jett Schilling Holds Down Home Turf

An incredible start to 2024 crowned San Clemente, California’s Jett Schilling (USA), the World Junior Champion, and he brought that bravado back home to Southern California. Schilling’s decimating forehand accrued an impressive 7.43 (out of a possible 10), and showed he has plenty to give heading into the Round of 32. Now, Schilling looks to turn his year around, and start a surge toward 2025 CT qualification.

“I just surf with passion and it’s been a while since I’ve made a heat to be honest,” said Schilling. “It’s been a tough year and I’m just stoked to make a heat and I’m fired up. I have coach Jake Davis helping me out a bunch, and just moved in with Griffin Colapinto. I’m just super thankful for all the boys, and they give me all the confidence.”

Fellow Southern Californians, 2024 CT rookies, Crosby Colapinto (USA) and Cole Houshmand (USA) also advanced alongside former CT veteran Kolohe Andino (USA) – who bested two-event victor and Huntington Beach’s own Kanoa Igarashi (JPN) for a runner-up advancement in their Round of 64, Heat 16 clash.

Marco Mignot’s Magnificent Debut Goes Near-Perfect

Rising talent Marco Mignot (FRA) established his presence in Huntington Beach with a jaw-dropping, Round of 64 debut against Southern California natives Cole Houshmand (USA) and Kade Matson (USA) along with Australian threat Dylan Moffat (AUS). Mignot’s incredible aerial antics and powerful backhand hammers earned the French competitor an impeccable 9.67 (out of a possible 10) and 18.24 (out of a possible 20) heat total despite a surge from Houshmand and Matson. The 2022/2023 Europe Qualifying Series (QS) victor, Mignot, looks to turn around his season.

“It feels really really good to get two waves like this is amazing,” said Mignot. “I found that left which put me back in the heat again, and got that confidence going so it feels really good. I think a lot of people were surprised, but I know I can surf like this. I’ve proved it once again today, but I have so much respect for Cole [Houshmand] and Kade [Matson]. They’re amazing surfers so it’s great to beat guys like that.”

Mateus Herdy’s Major League Performance Goes Excellent

Perennial CT qualification threat Mateus Herdy (BRA) made his intentions of wanting a result in Huntington Beach clear with a stunning debut. Herdy’s progressive style and powerful turns posted an excellent, 16.43 (out of a possible 20) heat total over fellow Brazilian Michael Rodrigues (BRA) who also advanced, Justin Becret (FRA) and Kai Martin (HAW).

“I’m so down on the rankings and I spoke to a few friends of mine. Yago Dora told me, ‘you should be getting 8’s every heat,’” said Herdy. “He called me out and I was freed up and I tried everything I wanted to try and the conditions were great. I lost the two Challenger events in the first round so to make this heat gives me a lot of confidence. A lot of things happened last year, and now I’m just getting it all together and trying to turn it around here and the rest of the year.”

Scattered Upsets Ensue With Riaru Ito Shaking Up the Rankings

An impressive opening day from Riaru Ito (JPN) set him up with a CT caliber heat including 2023 World Title contender Joao Chianca (BRA), former CT competitors Samuel Pupo (BRA), and Maxime Huscenot (FRA). Ito’s power toppled his opponents with a 14.83 heat total, eliminating current No. 2, Pupo and Chianca advancing on.

“Everybody in that heat is a good surfer, but I’m also a good surfer so I’m happy to get through these heats,” said Ito. “It’s my first time getting an excellent score on the Challenger Series. It feels really good to get that heat win and I’m just very thankful.”

Also notching brilliant Round of 64 wins, 2023 event runner-up Crosby Colapinto (USA), former CT competitors Jacob Willcox (AUS), Lucca Mesinas (PER), Caio Ibelli (BRA), Morgan Cibilic (AUS), 2022 WSL World Junior Champion Jarvis Earle (AUS), current Challenger Series No. 3 Mikey McDonagh (AUS), Brazilian veteran Rafael Teixeira (BRA), and Ventura, California’s Dimitri Poulos (USA), all moved into the Round of 32.

Event organizers will reconvene at 7:00 a.m. PDT to determine a possible 7:35 a.m. PDT start.

HUNTINGTON BEACH, Calif., USA (Wednesday, August 7, 2024) – The world’s elite class of Championship Tour (CT) qualification contenders made their highly anticipated debuts at the World Surf League (WSL) Lexus US Open of Surfing presented by Pacifico, Stop No. 4 of the 2024 Challenger Series, in testy two-to-three foot conditions. Men’s and women’s opening heats unfolded with the men’s Round of 80 and women’s Round of 48 finishing in their entirety. Now, the top seeds await their debuts to take on early standouts when competition resumes.
Zoe Benedetto Saves the Best for Last in Dominant Debut

A tough day of conditions were no trouble for Florida’s own Zoe Benedetto (USA), who posted the day’s best performance with a 15.33 (out of a possible 20) heat total in the final heat of the day – the women’s Round of 48, Heat 8. The reigning North America Qualifying Series (QS) Regional victor, Benedetto, looked right at home against recent Tahiti competitors Taina Hinckel (BRA) and Sanoa Dempfle-Olin (CAN) alongside Rosie Smart (AUS). Now, Benedetto looks for more to ignite her push toward CT qualification.

“I was really nervous the whole time, and I think my first heat is always the hardest heat for me just paddling out all jittery,” said Benedetto. “The East Coast this time of year is great practice for this, and I know in the afternoon it’s either going to be windy or a bit smaller. It feels good and I haven’t really gotten going yet, it’s been a slow start to my year. I started off good in January [at the World Junior Championships], but the Challenger has just been slow so far.”

Sierra Kerr Returns to Southern California in Winning Form

Reigning WSL World Junior Champion Sierra Kerr (AUS) is back in her part-time home of Southern California, and lit up the tough conditions on her dynamic forehand. Kerr’s signature progressive style led her to garner an impressive 7.50 (out of a possible 10) and an early heat win. The rising star’s win eliminated former CT competitor Paige Hareb (NZL), and Peru’s emerging talent Daniela Rosas (PER). Heat runner-up Anon Matsuoka (JPN) also advances on.

“When I was sitting out there it felt a lot worse than what I thought it was going to be unfortunately,” said Kerr. “I ended up on a set for that 7.50 and didn’t feel like I surfed it that great, but it was a bigger wave so that helps. I’m so excited [to be a wildcard for Fiji]. We just got back from a fun few days there and it’s going to be good fun, hopefully it’s pumping. It’ll be fun watching dad caddy, and I’m in the jersey.”

Former WSL World Junior Champion, and San Clemente’s own, Kirra Pinkerton (USA), debuted in strong form to carry momentum into the Round of 32. Pinkerton will be joined by Nanaho Tzsuki (JPN), Teresa Bonvalot (PRT), Keala Tomoda-Bannert (HAW), Louise Lepront (RSA), and Sara Wakita (JPN) who also earned early heat wins as they now prepare for top-seeded competitors.
Owen Moss Finds Early Success Near Home, Prepares for Top Seeds

One of North America’s rising talents, Owen Moss (USA), elevated the scale early with his 14.20 debut on his powerful forehand attack. Earlier this year, Moss’s impressive run in the North America Pro Junior earned him a place into the World Junior Championships. Now, North Carolina’s own, Moss, looks to show he’s a rising force among the world’s top contenders.

“[My experience at home] definitely helped me out and here you can see the waves coming from a little bit farther out than the East Coast,” said Moss. “In North Carolina they can kind of just pop up so here it’s easier to recognize those peaks coming in. It’s as simple as focusing on one wave at a time, one heat at a time. It’s kind of what everyone says but it’s true.”

Brazil’s Upcoming Talent Cauã Costa Provides Opening Upset

Upsets disrupted the opening rounds with Cauã Costa (BRA) and wildcard John Mel (USA) taking out current No. 6 Jordy Lawler (AUS) and former CTer Carlos Munoz (CRC) in Heat 4. Costa’s form was intact from the start, posting a 7.00 early on and putting pressure on his opponents before finding a backup score, and holding firm until the end of the heat with Santa Cruz native, Mel, advancing as heat runner-up.

“I’m very happy to make my heat, and to prepare for this event I just surfed every day to get used to conditions,” said Costa. “I’m feeling good to be here. I just waited for the best wave, and I waited about 20 minutes for that 7.00. Before that wave I was just praying for an opportunity and thank God it came.”

Additionally, Costa’s fellow Brazilian Heitor Mueller (BRA) bested an in-form Kolohe Andino (USA), who also advanced, to join 2023 WSL World Junior Champion Jarvis Earle (AUS), into the Round of 64 alongside Kyuss King (AUS), Dylan Moffat (AUS), Daniel Emslie (RSA), and Luke Thompson (RSA).

Event organizers will reconvene at 7:00 a.m. PDT to determine a possible 7:35 a.m. PDT start to competition.
