HONOLULU (October 23, 2024) – The ‘Oahu High School Surfing season will kick-off with the season’s first contest at Ala Moana Bowls this Saturday, October 26, 2024.

Through a collaborative effort among ‘Oahu high school surf team coaches and the Hawai’i Surfing Association, new locations and a new contest format will be featured this year to support the growing number of ‘Oahu schools competing in high school surfing.

Now totaling 17 high school surf teams from the OIA and ILH, this season brings new energy to the sport for student-athletes, their families, their schools and the community.

The 17 schools competing are:

Farrington High School
‘Iolani School
Kahuku High School
**Kailua High School
**Kaiser High School
**Kalaheo High School
**Kalani High School
Kamehameha Schools

The surf season consists of 7 contest days starting this Saturday and concluding in February 2025. Each contest day will offer a morning and an afternoon contest that will each showcase 6 ‘Oahu high schools as they compete in 5 divisions: Boys Shortboard, Girls Shortboard, Coed Bodyboard, Boys Longboard, and Girls Longboard. Surfers will earn points for their team to determine overall school ranking.

“Surfing is my daughter’s sport like so many others. Being part of ‘Oahu high school surfing provides so many benefits that outweigh the challenges that teams encounter to make this opportunity happen. Surfing has allowed my daughter to connect with her peers at school and build a sense of pride to represent her school and community doing what she loves. Surfing is more than just a sport, surfing has so many connections to our history, culture, health, ocean safety, and our Hawai’i lifestyle. I’m excited to see so many new schools join this season and think that the new contest format will make it fun with 6 schools competing at once,” said Joslyn Sato, Leilehua High School – volunteer parent manager. “I hope this year we can continue to come together to move surfing as a school sport forward and get more support.”

Since surfing is not a recognized OIA or ILH sport, team coaches have come together to coordinate a season that continues to provide students across ‘Oahu high schools the opportunity to represent their school in the waves.

● Provide an opportunity for Hawaiʻi youth surfers to represent their high school
● Foster school and community pride
● Instill and educate youth surfers with ocean safety and awareness
● Promote an active lifestyle and foster team camaraderie
● Expose students to career opportunities within the surfing and ocean industry ● Celebrate and honor, the culture, the history, and the birthplace of surfing
● Demonstrate to the Hawaiʻi State Legislature that there is a want and need for the appropriation of funds for surfing across Hawai’i high schools

The ‘Oahu High School Surfing Season will bring together over 225 surfers representing
17 high school surf teams from private, public, and public charter schools on ‘Oahu. The season runs from late October 2024 to February 2025. Contest days are open to the public and we encourage the community to come out and cheer on our high school surfers.
