SUNSET BEACH, Oahu, Hawaii, USA (Wednesday, February 21, 2024) – Today, Molly Picklum (AUS) and Jack Robinson (AUS) won the Hurley Pro Sunset Beach, Stop No. 2 on the 2024 World Surf League (WSL) Championship Tour (CT), in six-to-eight-foot perfect rights at Sunset Beach. The proving grounds of Oahu’s North Shore once again offered a real challenge to the best surfers in the world with solid waves, in shifting lineups, but overall plenty of opportunities to showcase their talent and kick off the new season.
A monumental shift in women’s professional surfing happened over the course of the season’s first two events, with the Top 17 taking on serious conditions at Pipe and Sunset and some of the youngest competitors showing up with massive performances and commitment to raise the bar. |

Picklum Goes Back-to-Back at Sunset, Takes Over Rankings Lead
Picklum was an integral part of the charge in making history this month as she collected huge scores for her relentless approach to hitting the biggest sections of the waves, holding nothing back. Today she earned back-to-back titles at Sunset. This win marks Picklum’s second victory on Tour, out of four Finals surfed, and the Australian will be wearing the yellow Leader jersey heading to Portugal for the next stop of the 2024 CT as the new World No.1.
“What a moment! Defending a title is so hard in our sport because the ocean is in charge,” Picklum said, “The ocean played its part for me and I’m really, really happy it did that. Every event feels different, so I’m just taking it for what it is and trying to find the little fun moments in between it all. I definitely wasn’t as confident in this event but I always kept belief and I think that’s one of my strengths.” |
|
The women’s Final was a rematch of the second Semifinal at Pipe last week between Picklum and Sakura Johnson, with a lot in the balance as the winning surfer would get to wear the rankings leader yellow jersey leaving the Hawaiian leg. Both surfers found similar waves to kick off the Final, but the Hawaiian won the first exchange with better-timed turns in the critical sections for a 7.17 (out of a possible 10) over the Australian’s 6.50.
Picklum backed it up quickly to take the lead midway through the heat and apply pressure to Sakura Johnson, who was surfing in her first-ever Final on the CT. But the Haleiwa local stayed patient, sitting in the lineup with priority waiting for the right wave. Her calculated approach, unfortunately, did not pay off as time ran down without offering any more opportunities for either surfer.
Picklum added yet another highlight to a spectacular four-week stint on the North Shore today with one of the biggest turns ever seen on the women’s Tour at Sunset Beach. In her Semifinal bout against Brisa Hennessy (CRC), the powerful regular foot posted a near-perfect 9.67 for a high-risk, high-reward single maneuver on a double-overhead wave. |
|
Bettylou Sakura Johnson (HAW) reached her first CT Final in her third year on Tour and has upped her game big time in 2024. The 18-year-old posted some of the event’s biggest scores, including a 9.17 in her first heat at Sunset yesterday. One of the most confident surfers in the Pipe barrels and the big open faces of Sunset, the Hawaiian will be a force to be reckoned with this season.
“It’s been an unreal last couple of days, we’ve been so fortunate to get good waves,” said Sakura Johnson. “I’m really just blessed to be home and to represent home, and have my coach behind me and have the confidence I needed to do well in this event. It’s pretty unreal. Molly and I talked about it two years ago, and now we’re doing it, and I’m really happy to be a part of it and to hopefully keep pushing this level, and it will be a new level of surfing for women’s surfing in the next few years.” |
|
Robinson Posts Near-Perfection for Sunset Glory
Jack Robinson (AUS) continues to build his legacy on the North Shore, as he picks up win No. 6 on the CT, his first at Sunset. After an upset loss in the Round of 32 at Pipe, the Australian bounced back in the best way with total domination all week, an incredible display of his signature carves, and the ability to find the deepest, cleanest barrels at Sunset.
“It was a crazy last few months at home, I had a baby and everything before coming here and it’s all new and just adapting,” said Robinson. “I’m just enjoying it so much today. I know I didn’t start good at Pipe but it didn’t matter, I was just trying to enjoy it so much and it’s so special. It was a cool wave, almost bending, and I’ve never been tubed twice on the inside here. And to have a Final with Kanoa, we’ve grown up together, we’ve been doing this for a long time. It’s a cool history and a lot more to come.”
Two surfers with a lot of history, competing against each other since their early grom years, Robinson and Kanoa Igarashi (JPN) met in the Final after dominating all week at Sunset. The Australian pulled the trigger first and wasted no time as his first wave went straight to excellence, an 8.17, to make his intentions clear to his opponent.
After an unlikely mistake on his first attempt, Igarashi fought back with a 7.33 to stay in fighting distance. But Robinson kept building momentum and found an absolute gem, locking into two barreling sections after a massive carve and was rewarded with a near-perfect 9.87 to put the Japanese surfer into an 18.04 combination situation (out of a possible 20).
Despite his best efforts, the gap was too much for Igarashi to overcome and Robinson claimed the win. The West Australian will leave Hawaii ranked second in the world. |
|
Kanoa Igarashi (JPN) was in need of a big result as well after a disappointing early exit at Pipe and found his groove on the big open walls of Sunset where he could lay down his lightning-fast turns to overcome some of the toughest competition this week.
“Growing up in California, Hawaii was just one flight away and a place we had to come and train, and back when I was younger I would dread coming over because it’d be scary to be here on the North Shore to surf bigger waves,” said Igarashi. “But, over the years I would try to put as much time as I could, and I have a really good team in my corner. Thanks to them they always pushed me, and I knew that if I wanted to be a top surfer on Tour I’d have to get good results here. I’m really happy with my start so far this year and just want to keep it going.” |

Florence Heads to Portugal as the World No. 1, Simmers Falls to World No. 2
North Shore local and two-time World Champion John John Florence (HAW) put up a great fight against Smith in the Quarters but ultimately fell short and had to settle for an equal 5th at Sunset after a runner-up at Pipe. His consistency at home has served him well, however, as he leaves Hawaii in pole position on the rankings and will be World No. 1 in Portugal.
The World No. 1 coming into this week at Sunset, Caitlin Simmers (USA), reached the Quarterfinals with fairly low scores and, by her own admission, average heat execution and unfortunately couldn’t turn on her magic against an in-form Hennessy this morning. Simmers spent most of the 30 minutes waiting in the lineup for set waves that never manifested and exited the heat with only 2 points on the board and an equal 5th-place result. She will head to Portugal, where she is the defending event winner, ranked second in the world.

SUNSET BEACH, Oahu, Hawaii, USA (Wednesday, February 21, 2024) – Finals Day at the Hurley Pro Sunset Beach, Stop No. 2 on the 2024 World Surf League (WSL) Championship Tour (CT), is ON, starting at 8:03 a.m with the women’s Quarterfinals in clean six-to-eight foot waves at Sunset.
The Quarterfinals are stacked with talent once again and the remaining surfers will fight for the prestigious Sunset titles and to move up the rankings before competition relocates to another continent next month.
|
|
In the women’s Quarterfinals, the Top 4 from Pipe are still in the draw, Caitlin Simmers (USA), Molly Picklum (AUS), Brisa Hennessy (CRC) and Bettylou Sakura Johnson (HAW), showing their performance was no coincidence last week.
The reigning World Champion Caroline Marks (USA) and Johanne Defay (FRA) made back-to-back Quarters as well and will be hoping to advance further in the Finals. At the same time, for Isabella Nichols (AUS) and Lakey Peterson (USA) it’s a big step in the right direction after an early exit at the first stop of the season.
The field is much more open in the men’s, with John John Florence (HAW) and Jordy Smith (RSA) as the only two athletes who made Finals Day at Pipe, still in contention. The Hawaiian has a shot at taking over the rankings lead and yellow leader jersey with a big finish at Sunset, but he will have to make it past Smith first as they draw each other in the Quarters.
For the rest of the surfers, big points are vital after a slow start if they want to build a safety net before the Mid-Season Cut approaches.

SUNSET BEACH, Oahu, Hawaii, USA (Tuesday, February 20, 2024) – Stop No. 2 on the 2024 World Surf League (WSL) Championship Tour (CT), the Hurley Pro Sunset Beach, resumed today and ran through the first three rounds of the women’s competition in classic four-to-six foot Sunset rights with light offshore winds.
The Top 17 enjoyed clean and dreamy conditions compared to the challenging, bumpy lineup over the weekend and put together big performances to earn their spot in the Quarterfinals. |
|
Defending Event Winner Picklum Applies Pressure to World No. 1 Simmers
Molly Picklum (AUS) had a slow start in the Opening Round this morning, only really finding one wave with scoring potential, but that was enough to avoid the treacherous Elimination Round. She picked up her game in the Round of 16, posting two solid scores with her powerful forehand snaps, as she builds momentum in her campaign to defend her 2023 title at Sunset.
“Being the defending winner may not add pressure, but it’s just more noise in your head,” Picklum said. “But it just means that I can surf this wave and have the ability to take it out, so let’s do it again! Being in the first heat overlapping, you have the priority for 40 minutes and hope to put on a good performance, but the ocean decided not to give us much. It feels like last year, in my first heat I didn’t really connect, but in this one, it started to come together, and hopefully, I keep getting better.” |
|
Sakura Johnson’s Jaw-Dropping Performances Continue into Sunset Beach
The day’s highlight went to North Shore’s own Bettylou Sakura Johnson (HAW) in dominant fashion. Sakura Johnson found cover behind a Sunset Beach curtain before unloading all her might on a critical section to earn a near-perfect 9.17 (out of a possible 10) and move directly into the Round of 16. Haleiwa’s standout wasn’t done yet, as she then took to the water against CT veteran Sally Fitzgibbons (AUS), where the two battled back-and-forth until Sakura Johnson ultimately claimed a win and back-to-back Finals Day appearances to start 2024.
“With overlapping heats, I talked with Ross (Williams) about staying busy in the first half and then really capitalizing on your priority time out there,” said Sakura Johnson. “Sally and I were close in scores, and I couldn’t really find that great of a wave, but thankfully I found one, and that ended up being a backup. A heat win is a heat win no matter if you surf really good and get 9s and 8s, or you could even make a heat with two 4s. Just happy to get through and once you get through those you just have to keep that confidence.” |
|
Peterson and Defay Answer Next Generation’s Charge, Secure Quarterfinal Appearances
Former runner-up in the world, Lakey Peterson (USA) bounced back after an uncharacteristic 17th-place exit last week at Pipeline and earned her spot in the Quarterfinals over Luana Silva (BRA). The Californian had previously come out of the Opening Round with the win, courtesy of an excellent 8.00 point ride with two big, open-face carves executed with power and style. This marks the first time Peterson has advanced past the Round of 16 at Sunset.
“There were waves to be ridden and scored and surfed well, I just kind of made it grindy on myself I feel like,” Peterson said. “I was hoping to get something mid-range on the board in those first 20 minutes, but I just kept falling so I was a little frustrated going into the priority heat. It’s a scary round that one so I’m super happy to make it out of it. Momentum and confidence are huge for me and my head space so it feels really good to get the comp going and a couple of wins and I’m super psyched for tomorrow!”
Fellow CT mainstay Johanne Defay (FRA) also delivered a powerful performance on her forehand to earn a 7.23 and move into a critical Finals Day showing to start 2024. |
|
Hennessy Takes Out Opening Day Super Heat, Defeats Bryan
Two of the Opening Round standouts, Brisa Hennessy (CRC) and Gabriela Bryan (HAW) matched up in the Round of 16 and fought hard until the dying moments for a chance to surf Finals Day at Sunset. Both surfers had previously found excellent scores, an 8.33 for Hennessy and a 9.00 for Bryan, but unfortunately, waves backed off a little bit in the third round, and it came down to strategy and a battle of smaller numbers. Hennessy eventually came out victorious and continues to build momentum on the Hawaiian leg with back-to-back Finals Day appearances.
“Gabriela is on fire, and she’s one of my favorite surfers out here,” Hennessy said. “I knew it was going to be power to power and that’s what we’re here for. I wish we had more opportunities, I feel like in the end it got a little grindy but props to her, she’s really bringing her best surfing. I’m just with the same mindset of no expectations and living vicariously through the moment and being open-minded. Sunset is such a beautiful canvas and as surfers we get the opportunity to be paintbrushes so I just want to paint! Bring my best surfing and push myself.”
Yellow jersey rankings leader Caitlin Simmers (USA) survived two low-scoring affairs today and managed to squeeze her way into the Quarters where she’ll face the Costa Rican and have to find her next gear for a shot at the Semis. The reigning World Champion Caroline Marks (USA) also advanced into her second straight Quarterfinals but hasn’t yet quite shown her trademark vertical, backhand attack on the big Sunset walls, while Isabella Nichols (AUS) eliminated two-time World Champion Tyler Wright (AUS) and earns her place into Finals Day.

SUNSET BEACH, Oahu, Hawaii, USA (Sunday, February 18, 2024) – The Hurley Pro Sunset Beach, the second stop on the 2024 World Surf League (WSL) Championship Tour (CT), completed a second major day of competition and ran through the men’s Round of 32 and Round of 16 to decide the men’s Quarterfinalists in challenging eight-to-ten foot rights at Sunset Beach.
Mixed swells and breezy winds tested the world’s best surfers again at Sunset, but as conditions improved throughout the afternoon, performance levels rose to match the talent of the remaining eight surfers in contention by the end of the day. |
|
Florence Maintains Impeccable Form at Home
Two-time World Champion John John Florence (HAW) put on another masterclass in his backyard, first by picking the right waves where most competitors struggled to identify any, then by absolutely tearing them apart with lightning-fast carves right under the lip for a 16.06 (out of a possible 20) heat total. A runner-up last week at Pipe, Florence has the potential to secure the yellow leader’s jersey here at Sunset after the early exit of his compatriot, Barron Mamiya (HAW).
“I got really lucky in the non-priority heat to find an open face wave, which there weren’t a lot of right now,” Florence said. “It took me a while to find another wave, there were a lot of wash throughs and eventually I just tried to get waves to get one turn on, a clean wall and a close out. Once I started looking for that I got two really good ones back-to-back. I guess I just changed my perspective on what I was looking for. It feels really good to just be chipping away at heats. I’m really enjoying it and the challenges that every heat brings and trying to just be ok with that and not be too hard on myself.” |
|
Smith’s Power Notches Back-to-Back Quarterfinal Appearances in 2024
CT veteran Jordy Smith (RSA) enjoyed the winning feeling once again with Round of 32 and 16 victories to surge into the Quarterfinals. Smith’s power sent him past Miguel Pupo (BRA), before facing another in-form event threat, Rio Waida (IDN), in the Round of 16, where he posted his second 7-point ride of the day amid the tough conditions. Smith’s back-to-back Quarterfinal appearances to start 2024 have sparked the South African’s vigor in the jersey as he now looks to carry that momentum into a world-class Quarterfinal against Florence.
“I’m surfing the best I can with the opportunities I get and it’s really difficult in the overlapping heats since you’re trying to position yourself and at the same time be mindful of those competitors who have priority,” said Smith. “Everyone’s sitting right at the bowl and I’m just doing the best with the cards I get dealt. John (Florence) took three of the waves I wanted. He’s definitely the best on the rail and if there’s something to draw inspiration from it’s definitely that.” |
|
O’Brien, Igarashi, Robinson, and Ferreira Remain Steadfast Amid Full Day of Action
Sunset Beach standout Ethan Ewing (AUS) kicked off his day with a big heat against 11-time World Champion Kelly Slater (USA), eliminating him from the competition. Ewing then had to face an in-form Liam O’Brien (AUS). O’Brien carried his momentum from his Round of 32 win against Caio Ibelli (BRA) through to his matchup against Ewing, and posted an impressive 7.83 (out of a possible 10), utilizing his dynamic forehand on multiple sections of a Sunset Beach diamond in the rough.
O’Brien will now face Ryan Callinan (AUS), after eliminating Connor O’Leary (JPN) in his Round of 16 heat, as both O’Brien and Callinan enter their first Quarterfinal appearance of 2024.
“The ocean felt like it was working with me a bit,” said O’Brien. “When I had priority, there was a bit of a lull and unfortunately for Ethan it went a bit turbo when he had priority at the end there. I’ve had so many heats where I’ve just been lost at sea, so it’s nice to get one where I get a couple waves. Obviously that was always going to be a really hard heat, Ethan’s just so good out here. Really happy to get past that one and we’ll see how we go in the next.”
Two of the form surfers of the Round of 32, Kanoa Igarashi (JPN) and Griffin Colapinto (USA) matched up in an excruciatingly slow battle in the Round of 16, coming down to the last seconds with a minimal ride for Igarashi to give him the edge over the former World No. 3 Colapinto. The Californian was hoping for one more opportunity, the kind he got in his previous round where he locked into the first tube of the day with a big snap to wrap the wave, earning a 9.00-point ride for his effort. Instead, it was Igarashi, needing a 1.67, who found enough of a wall to carve one turn and advance into the Quarters. Igarashi’s win tied the pair in their famous head-to-head rivalry.
Igarashi will face Seth Moniz (HAW) in the Quarters as the Hawaiian escaped a similarly nail-biting affair against rookie Jacob Willcox (AUS). Both surfers found a good score early on but struggled to pick the right backup wave and it all came down to the wire and a last ditch effort from Moniz.
Jack Robinson (AUS) proved he will be one to beat after overcoming the Round of 32’s top performer Jake Marshall (USA), who posted the day’s highest single-wave score of a 9.17, in a back-and-forth battle that went down to the final minutes. |

Big Names Dealt Early Eliminations in Moving Sunset Lineup
The Round of 32 witnessed some shocking early eliminations, most notably rankings leader Barron Mamiya (HAW), who was taken out by Frederico Morais (POR). The experienced Portuguese surfer selected better waves and applied his typical clean carves and smart attack to find one of the few big scores of the round, an excellent 8.00, to eventually take out Mamiya, the winner last week at Pipeline and the 2022 winner here at Sunset. Morais was eliminated by 2019 World Champion Italo Ferreira (BRA) in their Round of 16 heat.
Three-time WSL Champion Gabriel Medina (BRA) lost to Seth Moniz (HAW) in the Round of 32, Heat 4. Moniz’s confidence gained from defeating Medina carried into the Round of 16 where he overtook rookie sensation Willcox, who previously defeated Leonardo Fioravanti (ITA) in the Round of 16.
“That was pretty grindy and I’m sure online it looks a lot easier than it is,” said Moniz. “I’m just stoked I got gifted that last wave. I’m super stoked to make the Quarters at Sunset and I did it in 2022. I had a shocker at Pipe which is the event I look forward to the most so that one hurt. But I’m looking forward and just taking it one heat at a time. I had a long offseason and feel a little rusty getting back into the swing of things but now hopefully I get some better waves on Finals Day.”
11-time World Champion Kelly Slater (USA) also exited in equal 17th place despite keeping everyone on their toes with a last-second roll of the dice that saw him produce his signature carving 360 maneuver on a foamy Sunset right that came up short of the score he needed to advance.
With plenty of shuffling among the rankings set to take place, all-star Quarterfinal draws will provide the opportunity for those who remain in the draw to gain vital ground, and also a chance for the early upper echelon to start putting space between them and their opponents.

The men’s Round of 32 will enter the lineup at 8:03 a.m. HST and run using the overlapping format with 40-minute heats. The men’s Round of 16 will follow in the same format. An exciting opening day yesterday at Sunset delivered a lot of upsets in the opening round and forced some of the event’s top seeds to regroup as they faced elimination early. Today, there is no second chance; all two-surfer matchups will see someone pack their gear and head home, and the tension is palpable as surfers are about to take on challenging conditions again on Oahu’s famed North Shore.
As the format goes, Tour rookies and wildcards will face the world’s best, giving us great matchups starting with the all-Californian battle between close friends Griffin Colapinto (USA) and Kade Matson (USA) in the day’s opening battle.
Jacob Willcox (AUS) and Eli Hanneman (HAW) will face power surfers Leonardo Fioravanti (ITA) and Connor O’Leary (JPN) in Heats 3 and 11, respectively. Brodi Sale (HAW) will meet an in-form Ryan Callinan (AUS), who impressed yesterday, in Heat 12. Crosby Colapinto (USA) and Cole Houshmand (USA) take on two North Shore standouts Italo Ferreira (BRA) and Jack Robinson (AUS) in Heats 14 and 16, respectively.
Plenty of other battles promise non-stop action as the men fight for entry into the Round of 16 and potentially a ticket for the Quarterfinals later on today.

SUNSET BEACH, Oahu, Hawaii, USA (Saturday, February 17, 2024) – Stop No. 2 on the 2024 World Surf League (WSL) Championship Tour (CT), the Hurley Pro Sunset Beach, started today in solid eight-to-ten-foot rights at Sunset Beach. The day completed the opening two rounds of the men’s event, closing the North Shore leg early for four competitors.
After a shaky and slow start to the first heat of the day, conditions gradually cleaned up and offered plenty of opportunities for the world’s best surfers to perform in a variety of sections, from the big open walls to the inside racing barrels and vertical lips. |
|
Smith’s Disappearing Act Turns In Near Perfection
Jordy Smith (RSA) found the wave of the day towards the end of the Opening Round with an extremely long barrel for Sunset, from which most thought he couldn’t exit, and somehow miraculously reappeared in the channel. The South African was rewarded with a near-perfect score of 9.33 (out of a possible 10) and backed it up with a couple of turns to claim the day’s highest combined heat total of 15.50 (out of a possible 20).
“The off-season for me was just a lot of training,” Smith explained. “The last three years I haven’t put too much effort in and obviously with the new rookie class, it just kind of motivated me to get back to it. I guess when you put the work in, good things happen. You kind of go out there trying to find an open face and get some turns in, and if a barrel comes your way you kind of luck into it. That’s exactly what happened to me there.” |
|
Florence, Ibelli, and Ewing Thrive in Opening Round
Two-time World Champion and North Shore local John John Florence (HAW) once again showed his wealth of knowledge of surfing’s proving grounds as he skillfully navigated the heavy waters of Sunset to find two gems in a rough lineup. The current World No. 2 rode two nice barrels and put Jake Marshall (USA) and Keanu Asing (HAW) into a combination situation, needing two scores to come back in the heat.
“I was actually looking for turns the whole time, and I kept getting a good little double-up barrel, so I got kind of lucky,” Florence stated. “It is tough out there with a lot of water moving around, so I’m stoked to make it through that heat. It’s a long run this year so I’ll just keep moving forward and I’m stoked to be competing again after a little break after Pipe.” |
|
11-time World Champion Kelly Slater (USA) and Caio Ibelli (BRA) put on a masterclass in big, unruly Sunset and forced current World No. 1 Barron Mamiya (HAW) to face the treacherous Elimination Round fresh off a win at Pipeline. A former winner at Sunset, Mamiya was a favorite headed into his first heat, but he uncharacteristically seemed off-rhythm in the lineup while his opponents Slater and Ibelli were threading barrels and big open-face sections. The Brazilian got the nod with two good barrel rides and big turns for a solid 14.17 heat total (out of a possible 20).
“My Sunset practice unfortunately started the day Pipe started, so I got to put a lot of time in the lineup out here,” Ibelli said, referencing his early exit in the previous event. “The waves have been pumping, and I was surfing Waimea, so I jumped back 30 inches today, and it felt weird at first, but then I got into a good rhythm. Going into this heat I had a pretty good idea of what I wanted to do, it took a little bit of time to find those waves, but I eventually did, you just have to trust the knowledge and the process.” |
|
In a day mostly dominated by regular footers, the 2023 world runner-up, Ethan Ewing (AUS), and Kanoa Igarashi (JPN) were among those finding high scores. Ewing was the first surfer to reach the excellent range with an 8.00 point ride, for an incredible display of rail surfing on the large canvas provided by a solid Sunset wall. Igarashi mixed his approach with a turn and barrel on the same wave for his highest number and a spot into the Round of 32.
The form surfer of the Hawaiian leg last season, Jack Robinson (AUS) suffered an unlikely blow to his 2024 campaign early at Pipe, but came back fired up today and put together a strong display of high-performance surfing to easily advance in first out of the Opening Round. |
|
3X World Champion Medina and World No. 1 Mamiya Survive Early Elimination Scare at Sunset Beach
A rare Opening Round loss for three-time WSL Champion Gabriel Medina (BRA) proved no problem for the CT veteran. Medina’s decimating backhand attack on critical sections delivered an impressive 7.33 single-wave score and 13.83 heat total over fellow veteran Miguel Pupo (BRA) and wildcard Keanu Asing (HAW). Pupo’s ability to thrive under pressure kept Asing’s striking ability at bay as Medina and Pupo joined the world’s best into the Round of 32.
“It’s hard to lose the first heat and then you start thinking what went wrong but I tried to stay focused,” said Medina. “It’s challenging, it’s one of those days, but I’m happy to make it through. I haven’t spent much time here so I’m looking to make some heats and spend some more time out there, and also find the rhythm. Everyone is kind of looking for the wall and I found it on my last one. I knew it would be a good one and I’m just happy to make it through.” |
|
After a tough Opening Round loss, Barron Mamiya (HAW) returned to form and took advantage of the opportunities in the ever-shifting Sunset Beach lineup in his Elimination Round bout. Mamiya faced returning CT stalwart Frederico Morais (POR) and wildcard threat Kai Lenny (HAW). But, the North Shore’s own Mamiya held firm and moved into the Round of 32, eliminating Lenny from competition and retaining his grasp on the yellow leader’s jersey.
“Little bit of a reality check, I just couldn’t catch a wave in my first heat,” said Mamiya. “It felt good to get that out of the way, brush it off, and just forget about it. It was really hard out there just now. It looks like it’s 10-to-12 foot, but the waves you’re actually riding are three-to-four foot. It’s kind of hard to find them. But I’m stoked to squeak in. I’m riding the same board I rode at Pipe. It worked insane at Pipe, and I’ve been riding it at Sunset. It feels really good, I just need to get some waves.”
Mamiya’s fellow Hawaiian competitors, Ian Gentil (HAW) of Maui and South Shore, Oahu’s CT standout Seth Moniz, also added their names to big Elimination Round wins to surge into the Round of 32.

SUNSET BEACH, Oahu, Hawaii, USA (Saturday, February 17, 2024) – The Hurley Pro Sunset Beach, Stop No. 2 on the 2024 World Surf League (WSL) Championship Tour (CT), is ON after a week-long wait for conditions to align on Oahu’s North Shore. The swell has settled some, leaving solid six-to-eight-foot rights hitting the Sunset reef with power. The men’s Opening Round will hit the lineup at 8:03 a.m. HST and be followed by the men’s Elimination Round. |
|
After the completion of Stop No. 1 at Pipeline last week, today’s competition will be a second chance for those who started poorly and a test of momentum for the form surfers early in the season.
New wildcards will test the world’s best surfers, with a talented group of Hawaiians taking on the role. Long-time CT competitor Keanu Asing (HAW) will lead the charge alongside Brodi Sale (HAW) and big wave specialist Kai Lenny (HAW) in the men’s draw. Zoe McDougall (HAW) will face off against the reigning World Champion Caroline Marks (USA) and Sally Fitzgibbons (AUS) in her third participation on the CT when the women’s event gets underway.
Current rankings leader Barron Mamiya (HAW) will lead the men’s Opening Round today as the undisputed favorite, having won the event at Sunset in 2022 and coming off a hot start down the road. He will face Caio Ibelli (BRA) and 11-time World Champion Kelly Slater (USA) in Heat 3.
Other exciting matchups include Griffin Colapinto (USA) facing off with two Hawaiians in Heat 5, Seth Moniz (HAW) and Brodie Sale (HAW); a power surfing standoff between Leonardo Fioravanti (ITA), Callum Robson (AUS) and CT Rookie Cole Houshmand (USA) in Heat 8 and the Pupo brothers Miguel and Samuel taking on Jordy Smith (RSA) and each other in Heat 11.
