This is the list for “Best Male & Female Action Sports Athletes” (as if some sports are not ‘action’ but we digress). The ESPY is the sporting world’s version of the Academy Awards. Peyton Manning is the MC/Host. Big Stuff.
The “Action Sports” category was let in back in 2004. On the women’s side, there have been surfing winners – Stephanie Gilmore (’13), Maya Gabeira (’09), and Sofia Mulanovich (’05). Kinda amazing but…not one man.
This ain’t the first time a surfer has been on the nominating list though. Back in 2014, Carissa Moore and Twiggy were up for Best Male/Female Action Sports Athlete. Bethany Hamilton won an ESPY in 2004 for Best Comeback Athlete, and last year she turned down a nomination for Best Female Athlete With a Disability. Stephanie Gilmore has two, and Maya Gabeira and Sofia Mulanovich are both winners as well. Although male surfers have been nominated a few times, they’ve never won. So this would be HUGE for surfing and Sir JJF.

On this 25th year of The ESPY Awards, everyone who’s everyone in the world of sports has one. LeBron James, Cristiano Ronaldo, Serena Williams, Peyton Manning, Ronda Rousey, Floyd Mayweather–it’s quite the distinguished list. So let’s help out!
