72nd crossing after a 4-year hiatus…

Aloha Kakou,

Welcome to the Molokai Hoe! Whether you’re a local paddler or a visitor from afar, we extend a warm welcome to this year’s race. We hope your experience is nothing short of memorable.

With deep appreciation, we mark our return to the Kaiwi Channel races after a five-year hiatus, during which we’ve carefully observed and responded to our community’s needs in the wake of COVID and the Lahaina Wildfires.

Central to our mission is the cherished relationship we hold with the Host Island of Molokai. Since 1952, we’ve gathered as an ‘ohana wa’a, embracing the heart of our sport here on Molokai. Over the decades, what began as a local tradition has evolved into a global celebration of our culture, with paddlers from around the world looking to Molokai as the sacred starting point and pinnacle race to aspire to participate in. As we embark on this journey, let us remember that we come to Molokai as guests, and it’s our privilege to honor the rich heritage and culture of the canoe that Molokai graciously shares with us.

Mahalo NUI,

Luana Froiseth  – Race Director

The 2024 Moloka’i Hoe will feature a LIVE Broadcast TV production for spectators / supporters from around the world.

With the support of the Oahu Hawaiian Canoe Racing Association, Salt and Air Studios, & Nexstar Media, 1000+ paddlers from around the world will cross the treacherous Ka’iwi Channel.

The Molokai Hoe perpetuates the art of Outrigger Canoe Paddling, one of Hawaii’s and Polynesia’s most important and historic cultural traditions.

Our event and its broadcast will provide a platform to highlight these amazing athletes, and the significance of outrigger canoe paddling to our culture and keep it alive for future generations.

Join us in celebrating the finish of this prestigious outrigger canoe race from the island of Molokai with LIVE music and an awards presentation on Duke Kahanamoku Beach, fronting the Hilton Hawaiian Village.

OAHU HAWAIIAN CANOE RACING ASSOCIATION (OHCRA)

On October 12, 1952, three Koa outrigger canoes launched through the surf at Kawakiu Bay on Moloka’i’s west side. Powered by six paddlers, each of the canoes were bound for O’ahu, across 38+ miles of open ocean in the Ka’iwi Channel. Eight hours and 55 minutes later, the Moloka’i canoe, Kukui O Lanikaula landed on the beach at Waikiki in front of the Moana Hotel. This event started the world’s most prestigious outrigger canoe race, the Moloka‘i Hoe.

The Moloka’i Hoe has become one of the longest running annual team sporting events in Hawai’i, second only to football. The Moloka’i Hoe perpetuates one of Hawai’i’s and Polynesia’s most important and historic cultural traditions, while honoring outrigger canoe paddlers around the world. The Moloka’i Hoe tests the limits of physical / mental strength, individual endurance, courage, determination and teamwork while battling nature’s most extreme elements.

Each year over 1000+ paddlers from around the world compete in the Moloka’i Hoe, the men’s world championship in outrigger canoe racing. This year marks the Moloka’i Hoe’s 72nd crossing of the treacherous Ka’iwi Channel.
