BELLS BEACH, Victoria, Australia (Saturday, April 19, 2025) – The Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach Presented by Bonsoy, Stop No. 5 of the 2025 World Surf League (WSL) Championship Tour (CT), is OFF for the day due to unfavorable winds and smaller surf on offer at both Bells and Winkipop. The WSL Commissioner’s Office will reconvene tomorrow, Sunday, April 20, at 7:15 a.m. AEST for a possible 7:33 a.m. start.

“We are calling the event off today as the waves are small and the onshore wind is ripping it apart,” said Renato Hickel, WSL Deputy Commissioner. “We are going to come back and try tomorrow and make a call. Expectations are low for tomorrow, but we are hoping that with improved wind, there is enough energy to resume competition. If not, Monday, there is another bump in swell, so that could also be an option to run the remainder of the men’s Opening Round.”

When the event resumes, the men’s Opening Round will pick up with the second heat, featuring 2017 Bells winner Jordy Smith (RSA), who is fresh off a win in El Salvador. He will take on CT Rookies George Pittar (AUS) and Edgard Groggia (BRA) as Groggia looks hard for a solid result to jump up the rankings ahead of the Mid-season Cut.

The Victoria Trials Winner, Xavier Huxtable (AUS), will look to use his frontside as a point of difference when he takes on goofy-foot duo Italo Ferreira (BRA) and Ramzi Boukhiam (MAR) in Heat 6. Ferreira comes into the event ranked World No. 1 and with hopes of claiming his ringing his second Bell, while Boukhiam is in desperate need of a few heat wins to get his season back on track.

Reigning Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach event winner Cole Houshmand (USA) will take on location standout Matthew McGillivray (RSA) and his good friend Liam O’Brien (AUS) in Heat 12 of the Opening Round today.

BELLS BEACH, Victoria, Australia (Friday, April 18, 2025) – The Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach Presented by Bonsoy, Stop No. 5 of the 2025 World Surf League (WSL) Championship Tour (CT), kicked off today with the completion of the women’s Opening Round. The Bells Bowl delivered super clean surf in the three-to-four-foot range before the high tide swallowed the surf, and only one heat into the men’s Opening Round, the competition was put on standby until tomorrow. Before the event was called off for the day, some iconic guests made their appearances in specialty heats as the beach filled with Easter Weekend fans. The next call will be tomorrow, Saturday, April 19, at 6:45 a.m. AEST for a possible 7:03 a.m. start.
Gabriela Bryan Carries Momentum Into Bells with Opening Round Domination

Gabriela Bryan (HAW) picked up right where she left off last week in El Salvador with a dominant performance in her opening heat at the Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach. Bryan punched in an impressive 15.50 two-wave total (out of a possible 20) to set the bar high for the day’s Opening Round matchups. The 23-year-old held the lead over Costa Rica’s Brisa Hennessy, who secured the second-place position with a 6.50 and 5.67, leaving injury replacement Nadia Erostarbe (ESP) in last and to the Elimination Round.

“It’s awesome. I [surfed the] last heat in El Salvador, first in Bells, it’s kind of crazy,” said Bryan. “It happened so fast, but I’m just taking all the momentum and just kind of doing the same thing I’ve been doing, not really changing anything, but yeah, it’s a lot. It’s such a quick turnaround, but I’m enjoying it. I’m so happy to be back at Bells and get the first heat here.”

Local Wildcard Ellie Harrison Cruises Into Round of 16

Ellie Harrison (AUS), stepping in as the event wildcard for Tatiana Weston-Webb (BRA), made the most of her local knowledge to dominate the bigger sets in her Opening Round heat. Harrison took down fellow Australian and event favorite Molly Picklum (AUS), along with 2025 CT Rookie Vahine Fierro (FRA), to punch her ticket straight into the Round of 16. It’s a familiar start for Harrison, who pulled off a similar wildcard upset at Bells in 2024, where she also defeated Picklum in the Opening Round on her way to a standout 5th-place finish. With the hometown energy on her side and the local crowd behind her, Harrison will be eyeing a wildcard dream run all the way to the podium.

“It was fun out there, but I don’t know, I was really, really nervous in that heat,” said Harrison. “Everything felt like it was getting going wrong. My alarm didn’t set this morning, so I woke up late, and everything just felt like it was going wrong. But when I came down and there were waves, I was just really excited to get out there, and it cleaned up a lot since the morning. It was a really fun heat to have with Molly [Picklum] and Vahine [Fierro], and really happy we just got waves.”

Two-time Bells Winner and World Champion Wright Finds Her Groove at Bells

One of the most experienced surfers to claim a heat win today was two-time Bells winner Tyler Wright (AUS), whose trademark frontside power game saw her claim a convincing win over CT Rookie Erin Brooks (CAN) and reigning World Junior Champion Luana Silva (BRA). Wright picked off one of the better-looking set waves and went to work, laying down some huge hacks to post an excellent 8.17 and win.

“This is the freest I’ve surfed in a long time,” said Wright. “Just mentality, physicality and everything like that, it feels really good. I was actually really disappointed with El Salvador. I felt like my free surfing was really good and then in the heat, I wasn’t super impressed. I really like my boards, they feel great, and I feel fit and strong. I’m happy to be healthy and surfing here when there’s waves.”

After a win to open the season at Pipe, Wright has struggled to get past the Round of 16, but today’s performance may suggest she has found her groove at a happy hunting ground on home soil.

“I feel like [the Bell] carries so much weight,” continued Wright. “For everyone that’s been raised here, for everyone that’s been coming down to Wadawurrung Country. I’ve been coming down here since, I think, 2006 maybe, and so being here at Djarrak, I think it does something to your soul. It’s a true honor and pleasure to just be welcomed here. We had such a beautiful Welcome to Country yesterday, and it honestly is just so beautiful to be here.”

Mixed Results for USA Contingent: Marks Sent to Elimination While Kenworthy, Peterson and Lindblad Advance

Lakey Peterson (USA) leaned into both her years of CT experience and her personal connection to Bells Beach, her home away from home with her husband’s local ties, to take a standout win in the Opening Round. Peterson edged out current World No. 1 and defending event winner Caity Simmers (USA) by 1.83 points to claim the heat win and move directly into the Round of 16. Local trials winner Carly Shanahan (AUS) couldn’t find her rhythm in the tricky conditions and will now battle through the Elimination Round when competition resumes.

“My husband grew up right over the hill here, so I’ve been coming here a lot, for like 10 years now since we’ve been together, outside of the event just surfing and visiting him,” said Peterson. “So it feels like a second home. I love Bells, and I hope it continues to love me back this whole week. It does feel like a slice of home for me, and at this point in the year, it’s nice to be able to come here and get home-cooked meals. My mother-in-law’s been baking away, so I have to slow down on the treats. I feel like I have a good relationship with the wave, obviously a nice right-hand point break is something I love, and I am looking forward to a good week.”

Sawyer Lindblad (USA), the 2024 Rookie of the Year, continues to build momentum in her sophomore season, advancing straight to the Round of 16 after a confident win in Heat 6 of the Opening Round. Lindblad posted a 14.63 heat total to take the win over Isabella Nichols (AUS) and Bettylou Sakura Johnson (HAW), showing similar form to her 2024 Bells performance, where she finished in 5th place. Nichols started the heat strong with a 7.33 and secured the second advancing spot, while Johnson will now look to regroup in the Elimination Round.

Caroline Marks (USA), 2023 World Champion and current World No. 4, uncharacteristically found herself in the Elimination Round for the first time since the 2024 Surf City El Salvador Pro. She will be up against 2024 World Junior Champion Luana Silva (BRA) and Shanahan.

Marks was relegated to the Elimination Round by rookie Bella Kenworthy (USA) and veteran Sally Fitzgibbons (AUS) in Heat 4 of the Opening Round. Kenworthy led the way with two six-point rides, with Fitzgibbons closely following in second place. 18-year-old Kenworthy has been in a strong rhythm all season, having yet to drop below 5th place in the previous three competitions. Despite this being only her fourth session out at Bells, Kenworthy will now move to the Round of 16 for another shot at Finals Day.

“I’ve been trying to just block out the fact that that was only my fourth session out there, and thankfully, the two good waves came to me and I got pretty lucky,” said Kenworthy. “I got basically zero good waves in my free surfs, but I’m just out there trying to identify where the good ones are. I don’t know if I really have that great of a grip on it yet, but I’m just trying to learn every day and take it all in. It’s very hard for me to keep out of my mind that the people I’ve looked up to my whole life, I’m surfing against them now, so I just try not to think about it and try and just focus on myself.”

Short Day for Men’s Opening Round

The opening heat of the men’s Opening Round was taken out by CT sophomore Crosby Colapinto (USA), who overcame Rio Waida (INA) and Imaikalani deVault (HAW), as conditions became too slow with the incoming tide. With only nine waves surfed in 35 minutes by the three surfers, it was wave choice that was key, with Colapinto finding the best sets to earn a 12.84 two-wave total and take the win for a spot in the men’s Round of 32. Waida progressed in the second spot, with deVault finishing third and now facing the Elimination Round when competition resumes.

By the end of Heat 1, the conditions had slowed, and a sea breeze began to blow, forcing the event to go on hold. With conditions continuing to deteriorate, the call was made to put the competition on standby until tomorrow morning, when the next call will be made. The next call will be tomorrow, Saturday, April 19, at 6:45 a.m. AEST, for a possible 7:03 a.m. start.

Weekend Fans Treated to Specialty Heats Featuring Fanning, Gilmore, and Ho, and ‘Stone & Wood Afternoon Delight’ Twin Fin Showcase

As the tide filled in and waves slowed down on the Bowl, spectators at Bells Beach were treated to the ‘Rip Curl Icons Heat’ with four-time Bell Ringers Mick Fanning (AUS) and Stephanie Gilmore (AUS) hitting the lineup with Hawaiian legend Mason Ho (HAW). The three traded waves and showed their connection to this wave, much to the delight of the thousands of fans on the beach.

Shortly after, another group of icons took to the waves at Bells Beach for the ‘Stone & Wood Afternoon Delight’. Former CT competitors Luke Egan (AUS), Rosy Hodge (RSA), Bells Beach locals Adam Robertson (AUS) and Tully Wylie (AUS), along with Jesse Starling (AUS), were all given fresh twin-fin boards, shaped by Bob McTavish, Mark Richards, Neil Purchase Junior, Shyama Buttonshaw, and Draft (by Josh Kerr), and an empty Rincon lineup. The five surfers styled their way down the line as fans of legal drinking age enjoyed a cold beverage and cheered on from the Stone & Wood Bar on top of the hill at Bells.

The event will start at 7:30 a.m. AEST with the women’s Opening Round and will be followed by the men’s Opening Round and women’s Elimination Round. The event will be held at Bells Beach in clean two-to-four-foot waves with 30-minute heats.
The women will kick off the Opening Round this morning with Heat 1 featuring Gabriela Bryan (HAW), Brisa Hennessy (CRC), and injury replacement Nadia Erostarbe (ESP). Bryan comes in with momentum after her breakthrough win at the Surf City El Salvador Pro and will look to keep it rolling on another right-hand point break. Hennessy, currently sitting at World No. 12, enters a critical heat as she fights to move above the Mid-season Cut line, while Erostarbe steps in as an injury replacement aiming to make the most of her opportunity at one of the Tour’s most iconic stops.

Heat 3 will see World No. 1 and defending Bells Beach winner Caity Simmers (USA) take on Lakey Peterson (USA) and local Trials winner Carly Shanahan (AUS). Simmers returns to Bells in top form as she looks to defend her title and extend her lead atop the rankings. She’ll face tough competition in Peterson, who considers Bells a second home and brings years of experience at the venue, and Shanahan, the local trials winner whose familiarity with the break could give her an edge in her CT debut.

Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach Presented by Bonsoy Set To Start Friday with Promising Forecast

BELLS BEACH, Victoria, Australia (Thursday, April 17, 2025) – The 2025 World Surf League (WSL) Championship Tour (CT) season continues with Stop No. 5, the Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach Presented by BonsoyThe world’s best surfers have arrived in Victoria, Australia, for the event, which holds a competition window from tomorrow, April 18, through April 28. The forecast looks promising for a big opening day of competition tomorrow, with the first call at 7:15 a.m. AEST for a potential 7:30 a.m. start.

The historic Bells Beach competition is the first of three events in the inaugural GWM Aussie Treble. All three competitions hold massive weight, with the Mid-season Cut looming after the final of the three, the Western Australia Margaret River Pro. Big results from underdogs and a surprise upset for favorites at Stop No. 4 in El Salvador saw a huge shakeup in the rankings, with many top performers needing a successful Australia leg to secure their place on Tour.

Current Rankings Leaders Simmers and Ferreira Return to Chase Their Second Bell

Defending event winner Caity Simmers (USA) returns to Bells as World No. 1. The 19-year-old carried the momentum from her victory last year through to her first World Title, maintaining her status near the top of the rankings ever since. Across the four events so far this season, Simmers has placed in the Quarterfinals or better at every stop, including claiming victory at the inaugural Surf Abu Dhabi Pro.

“It’s been a whirlwind,” Simmers said. “The travel is pretty wild. I just want to make a turn in my heat. That’s the goal, but yeah, I hope we get fun waves, and today the waves are really fun, so that’s a good sign.”

A dramatic finish to the 2024 Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach Final saw Simmers deliver a buzzer-beater to defeat Johanne Defay (FRA) and ring the iconic Bell trophy for the first time.

“I think it was just a thing of getting lucky in the last minute of the heat, and sometimes it happens, and sometimes it doesn’t, and it’s special,” Simmers continued. “I think it just makes me grateful to be a surfer because you can win a heat in the last thirty seconds, and it’s like not even up to you, it’s up to the ocean, and if it happens, then it’s the most exciting thing ever, and if it doesn’t, then you just hope it happens in the next one, so I think it just those moments make me really grateful to be a surfer. It doesn’t happen that often, but when it does, then it’s really great.”

When Italo Ferreira (BRA) earned his first-ever CT victory at Bells Beach in 2018, it marked a massive turning point in his career, leading to a World Title in 2019 and an Olympic Gold Medal in 2021. As a result, the current World No. 1 holds a special place in his heart for the Victorian coastline, where he has made Finals Day in four out of the past seven events. The 2018 Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach saw Ferreira defeat three-time World Champion Mick Fanning (AUS) in his last event as a full-time competitor. The following season at Bells, the Brazilian was defeated by Jordy Smith (RSA) in the Quarterfinals, a scenario that repeated itself last weekend at the Surf City El Salvador Pro, where Ferreira again lost to Smith in the Quarterfinals.

“I was watching [the celebration video from the 2018 win at Bells] this morning,” said Ferreira. “I was showing my girl the video, and then I saw Mick [Fanning] after that with his kid, and it was so special. I had chicken skin. That was my first win, and then after that, I had two more in 2018, but I didn’t have the chance to fight for the Title, and that was terrible for me. It’s really special to be back because you can remember all those moments. It’s kind of different now because I’m the top and No. 1 and this makes me more motivated to win and do my best.”

Smith Brings Decades of Experience and Fresh Momentum to Bells Beach

Jordy Smith (RSA) heads to Bells Beach with major momentum following his first CT victory in eight years at the Surf City El Salvador Pro. The 37-year-old now sits at World No. 5 and enters a key stretch of right-hand point breaks known to suit his surfing, especially with Bells Beach being his last CT win in 2017.

“I’m an absolute surf dog, surf frother at heart, and that’s really what it’s about for me,” said Smith. “I love to surf, so I wake up every morning and get out there. I’m 20 years older than some of the people on Tour, so I just have them inspire me and push me. That’s all I can really ask for, and I just kind of keep swinging.”

With 17 years on the CT, Smith brings a wealth of experience to one of the Tour’s most iconic stops as he continues to strengthen his World Title campaign in 2025. Bells Beach holds special memories for Smith, being the first location he traveled to outside of South Africa. With momentum and experience on his side, Smith will be one to watch during the Aussie Treble. He will first come up against George Pittar (AUS) and Edgard Groggia (BRA) in Heat 3 of the Opening Round.

“I first came to Bells when I was 12 years old,” Smith continued. “It was the very first place I traveled to outside of South Africa, and I’d always just really wanted to come to Bells Beach. Showing up here for the first time was just a dream come true. It’s been a lot more built up since. I think we stayed at the caravan park, but just seeing it for the first time as a child was a childhood dream, and I still get that feeling when I run down the stairs, whether the names are on it or not, the environment and the people that are around here are incredible, really warm and welcoming, and I think the surfers really appreciate you guys hosting us every year and looking out for us.”

Picklum Eyes First Win in Home Country, Brooks Prepares for First CT Heats at Bells

The only surfer on Tour to have placed Semifinals or better in all four events so far this season, Molly Picklum (AUS) returns to Australia ranked World No. 3 and ready to claim her first victory on home soil. After a classic Aussie clash saw her finish runner-up to two-time World Champion Tyler Wright (AUS) in 2023, Picklum is hungrier than ever to ring the Bell and add her name alongside past champions.

“I’m really happy, and I’ve got natural energy coming back home with three events in Australia,” Picklum said. “I feel like I’ve had so many fun heats with Caity [Simmers] and, yeah, I feel, I don’t know, there’s no one particular, I feel like I’m just really enjoying the tour and all the bits and bobs that the tour has. But I feel like my battles with Caity are always really fun.”

Tour Rookie Erin Brooks (CAN) may be competing in her first CT event at Bells Beach in 2025, but the 17-year-old already has fond memories of the Bells Bowl, having claimed the Rip Curl GromSearch International title in its waters in 2023. A solid start to her first CT campaign sees Brooks sitting as World No. 8, with Finals Day finishes in Abu Dhabi and Portugal already under her belt, added to her incredible first CT win as a wildcard in Fiji in 2024.

“I’m so excited to be competing at Bells for the first time in the CT and being here as a Rip Curl rider, it feels like home, and I’m just so excited to represent them out here, and hopefully we score some really good ways,” said Brooks. “I have so much support behind me being here, and I’m excited to walk down those stairs. You have Bells and Winki right next to each other, and you can surf both in just one day. I like Winki a little bit more. It’s more high performance, but Bells, you can just put it all out on the face, do those big real turns, and you definitely see a lot of spray from out the back, and I’m excited to be in a jersey here, and I’ve never really got that opportunity.”

Victoria’s Surf Coast Welcomes Back The World’s Best

Now in its sixth decade, the Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach is not only a staple on the WSL schedule but also on the world-class calendar of sporting events held in the state of Victoria. Along with the Australian Open of Tennis, the Melbourne Grand Prix, and the AFL Grand Final, to name a few, the tradition of cheering on the best surfers on the planet from the Beach at Bells on Easter Weekend is an annual tradition for sports fans Australia-wide.

“The Rip Curl Pro is one of the best events on the international surfing calendar, and we’re excited to showcase Victoria’s stunning Surf Coast to a global audience once again,” said Steve Dimopoulos, Victoria’s Minister for Tourism, Sport and Major Events. “This event draws thousands of visitors to the region each year, delivering a major boost to local businesses and cementing Victoria’s reputation as the home of world-class events. Whether it’s global stars or Victorian wildcards, this event continues to give the next generation of surfers the chance to shine on one of the most iconic waves in the world.”
