Current World No. 2s Carissa Moore and Filipe Toledo Eager for Another Win at Surf Ranch
Past event winners Carissa Moore (USA) and Filipe Toledo (BRA) are both currently second on the rankings and will be eager to have another big result here to overcome Tyler Wright (AUS) and Joao Chianca (BRA), respectively, and move up to World No. 1. Moore will surf in the first heat of the women’s Qualifying Round against defending event winner Johanne Defay (FRA), alongside rising stars Caitlin Simmers (USA) and Bettylou Sakura Johnson (HAW).
“It’s not easy, it’s hard and so much different than the ocean,” said Moore. “You’re in an arena with people at every edge of the pool and a perfect wave that comes every four minutes. It’s in your hands if you mess up or don’t. I’ve been trying to keep it fun and keep it light, and hopefully that will work in the contest.”
Toledo will make his event debut in Heat 2 of the men’s Qualifying Round. He has never missed a Final at this event and will be looking to maintain that record.
“It’s a perfect wave, there’s everything you dream of, barrels, air sections, everything,” said Toledo. “You just really have to try to figure out the timing and try to bring variety to a new line. I always say, every wave here is a perfect 10, you just have to perform and surf your best and there’s a lot of pressure. It takes me out of my comfort zone of the ocean.” |
