LOS ANGELES, Calif., USA (Thursday, March 27, 2025) – Today, Tatiana Weston-Webb (BRA), the 2021 World Title runner-up and Olympic Silver Medalist, announced her withdrawal from the remainder of the World Surf League (WSL) 2025 Championship Tour (CT) to prioritize her well-being.
“This has not been an easy time for me. I am incredibly grateful for everything I have achieved in surfing so far, and for the support I have always received from my sponsors, team, and fans. Every achievement has been the result of intense and collective effort. Recently, I realized that I needed to pay closer attention to my emotional health. As an athlete, I have always been passionate about what I do, but I also know that taking care of my well-being is essential to honoring my passion and continuing to compete at a high level. The emotional and physical exhaustion I have felt lately were clear signs that it was time to pause and reconnect with myself,” said Weston-Webb.
“Talking about mental health in sports is something I believe is important for all of us,” she continued. “I want to be honest with those who follow and support me by acknowledging that showing vulnerability does not make us weaker; on the contrary, it makes us more human and connected, and it also allows us to reach our full potential both in and out of competition. This break is not an end, but a new beginning. I know that with everyone’s support, I will return to the water stronger, more self-aware, and more passionate than ever.”
The WSL supports Weston-Webb in this decision, and looks forward to her return to competition when she is ready.
“Tatiana’s well-being comes first, and we admire her openness in prioritizing her health,” said Jessi Miley-Dyer, WSL Commissioner. “Tati is one of the most dynamic and accomplished surfers of her generation. We know fans around the world will continue to support her on her journey, and we wish her all the best during this time.”
Competing at the highest level of professional surfing for nearly a decade, with many years as a top junior before that, the 2015 Rookie of the Year and Qualifying Series Champion has experienced elite sporting milestones few athletes ever reach. As a two-time Olympian, Weston-Webb’s career has also been marked by moments on the Olympic stage, as a part of Team Brazil, in addition to her success on the CT.
Weston-Webb’s two biggest results—the Paris 2024 Olympic Games and 2021 WSL Finals—are complemented by her Gold Medal at the Santiago 2023 Pan American Games, four CT event victories from 12 Finals, two ISA World Junior Gold Medals, and a Perfect 10 at Teahupo’o, Tahiti, that remains one of the standout moments of her career. The 28-year-old has finished in the CT’s top five in five seasons, more than half of her CT career, including placing World No. 3 in 2024.
With 2025 WSL Replacement Surfer Nadia Erostarbe (ESP) already filling in for the remaining pre-Mid-Season-Cut events for Johanne Defay (FRA), an additional position will be open at each event. This position will be assigned to an event wildcard at every stop.
